SUMMARY:Three Effective PTSD Interventions Most Therapists Don’t Know (USA 2018)
DESCRIPTION:2018 GARDEN GROVE\, CALIFORNIA / 90 minute clinical session \nMost people naturally recover from trauma. What can we learn from them to help us treat PTSD more effectively? Padesky reviews findings from researchers Ehlers and Clark in the United Kingdom and highlights effective interventions developed by them that have not been widely disseminated in the United States. These interventions foster client collaboration in PTSD treatment\, identify the key moments in traumatic memories that are most important to address\, and help clients put the trauma in the past so they can reclaim a full and engaged life. \nEach intervention is illustrated with clinical examples that show therapists how to use these methods in their own practice.\nOBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this session\, attendees will be able to: \n\nIdentify three ways people who develop PTSD differ from people who naturally recover from trauma\nDescribe reliving methods used to identify emotional hot spots and gaps in trauma memories\nApply “then” and “now” methods to places and circumstances of trauma\n\nWHENDuring the Summit for Clinical ExcellenceEast Meets West: Multiple Perspectives on Trauma & AddictionMarch 2\, 2018 from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm \nWHEREWyndham Anaheim Garden Grove12021 Harbor BlvdGarden Grove\, CA 92840Special Conference Room Rates include FREE Parking (discount cut off date January 31\, 2018) \nCOSTfrom $199-375 (early birds save alot – hurry – only limited slots for maximum savings)https://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/fees \nCONTACTKari Primiano216-258-0867 or email kprimiano@iabhc.com \nEvent Websitehttps://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/home \nREGISTRATION PAGEhttps://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/begin \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Assertive Defense of the Self: CBT for Social Anxiety (USA 2017)
DESCRIPTION:SAN DIEGO\, CALIFORNIA: two hour master clinician seminar presented at the 51st Annual Convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) \nMASTER CLINICIAN SEMINAR 6: Assertive Defense of the Self: CBT for Social Anxiety \nPRESENTER: Christine A. Padesky\, PhD\, Center for Cognitive Therapy\, Huntington Beach\, California with Kathleen A. Mooney\, PhD\, Center for Cognitive Therapy (Huntington Beach\, CA)\nPadesky brief biography\nMooney brief biography \nDESCRIPTION: Many therapists treat social anxiety with an emphasis on testing client beliefs that other people will be critical and rejecting if they make mistakes or look foolish. Padesky (1997) has argued that an emphasis on these “danger” beliefs misses the point with treatment of social anxiety. She suggests that\, just like in the treatments of other phobias\, treatment of social anxiety is more effective when the focus is on intensive exposure to criticism and rejection with the opportunity for coping practice. \nPadesky developed a method\, “assertive defense of the self\,” which guides socially anxious clients in the development of their coping skills to manage criticism and rejection as well as the confidence to use them. She uses video (Padesky\, 2008) to demonstrate and discuss the several stages of “assertive defense of the self.” While this step-by-step approach is simple to understand\, there are nuances that can derail therapists in its application. Padesky highlights common therapist errors and beliefs that interfere with successful treatment outcome. \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nARTICULATE the relative benefits of a focus on coping or danger in CBT with social anxiety\nUSE a targeted interview to identify feared criticisms and “assertive defense” responses\nDESIGN relevant behavioral experiments for out of session practice\n\nRECOMMENDED READINGS \nClark\, D.M.\, Ehlers\, A.\, Hackmann\, A.\, McManus\, F.\, Fennell\, M.J.V.\, Waddington\, L.\, Grey\, N.\, &Wild\, J. SUMMARY:Anxiety Traps! CBT Solutions (Canada 2017)
DESCRIPTION:2017 St. John\, CANADA –  two day / 12 hour workshop (9:00 am – 4:30 pm each day) \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONClients often feel trapped in anxiety. This is because common anxiety coping strategies such as avoidance and safety behaviors actually maintain anxiety disorders. Unfortunately\, some common therapy practices designed to relieve client distress can also trap therapists and clients in ineffective cycles of therapy. \nLeading cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) instructor Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D. teaches principles and methods that help therapists and clients avoid both types of anxiety traps. Padesky teaches which CBT therapy interventions are most helpful for each type of anxiety disorder and when using these same methods can actually prolong anxiety treatment. \nOne of the features past participants of this workshop found most helpful was Dr. Padesky’s new framework of “danger disorders” and “coping disorders” which simplifies decision making about which interventions to choose even when the client experiences more than one type of anxiety disorder. \nThose who have attended Dr. Padesky’s workshops in the past are familiar with her signature workshop approaches. After she demonstrates key therapy methods via live demonstrations or video\, participants have an opportunity to bring their learning to life in carefully designed experiential exercises. These are framed by her clear didactic teaching\, organized handouts\, and rich clinical discussions. Learning unfolds in simple steps which layer over the course of the workshop to yield a sophisticated and nuanced treatment approach by the end. \nAttend this workshop to learn principles underpinning anxiety treatment methods and to practice the skills required to effectively use CBT anxiety protocols. Enjoy this workshop for all Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humour\, and optimism which support learning to treat your clients’ anxiety disorders more effectively.\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nTEACH clients the anxiety equation\nRECOGNIZE common treatment principles for danger and coping disorders\nIDENTIFY triggers and maintenance factors for each anxiety disorder\nPRACTICE induction methods used in treatment of panic\nTEACH clients to address “what if?” GAD worries with action plans\nLEARN methods for working with anxious imagery\nGIVE a rationale for “assertive defense of the self” with social anxiety\nOBSERVE approaches that address post-traumatic memory gaps\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTENDThis workshop is exclusively for the staff of addiction and mental health Services\, Horizon Health Network\, Saint John Zone\, New Brunswick\, Canada. \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols\, more expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend to learn treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework that will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nWORKSHOP SPONSORSaint John Regional Hospital Foundation \nThe Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation has raised over $80 million to date in support of excellence and innovation in the areas of equipment\, mental health\, research\, education and patient comfort at the Saint John Regional Hospital\, the largest health care centre in the province – providing world-class care for all New Brunswickers. \nThis workshop focus is on practical\, clinical tools for therapists\, using a hands-on format involving numerous role-plays and exercises\, accompanied by extensive handouts.\nPRESENTER – Christine A. Padesky\, PhD\nChristine A. Padesky\, Ph.D.\, is considered one of the leading cognitive therapy workshop presenters in the world\, appreciated for her depth of knowledge\, compassion\, and good-humored warmth. DESCRIPTION:BELFAST\, NORTHERN IRELAND:  1 hour Christine Padesky Keynote Address at the 44th Annual BABCP Conference \nKeynote information available online from: Conference Programme (opens in PDF format) (LINK NOT LONGER VALID) \nTO REGISTER for the Conference visit: http://www.babcpconference.com/registration/registration_2016.htm \nMOM2 reflects the highest standards of evidence-based practice in an appealing and easy to use self-help workbook.\nKEYNOTE ABSTRACT: There has been a rapid expansion in CBT protocols and practices since the first edition of Mind Over Mood was published in 1995. Our goals for the 2nd Edition of Mind Over Mood (MOM2) (Greenberger & Padesky\, 2016) were to reflect the highest standards of evidence-based practice and\, at the same time\, offer an appealing and easy to use self-help workbook. Reaching these goals required rethinking the structure and content of MOM2 in ways we did not anticipate at the beginning of our four year effort. What we learned in the process offers helpful insights into current CBT practice as well as guidelines for integrating self-help into therapy. \nThis keynote highlights the practical and accessible solutions we derived to meet challenges such as: \n\nMOM2 teaches readers to understand and manage a variety of moods\, yet there are different treatment paths for each mood. How can a single book align with a myriad of evidence-based treatments and remain simple for readers to follow?\nThere are now many CBT therapies. We wanted to integrate classic CBT methods with evidence-based practices that emphasize acceptance\, mindfulness\, and positive psychology. How is it possible to meaningfully integrate multiple treatment perspectives and at the same time maintain a focus on step-by-step development of mood management skills?\nAlthough self-help can be less rigorous than therapy\, we wanted to encourage readers of MOM2 to follow evidence-based practices such as: regular completion of mood measures\, rehearsal of skills until mastery is achieved\, goal setting enhanced by motivational interviewing\, and proactive relapse management. How can readers be enticed to follow such good treatment principles?\n\nIn learning how to solve these challenges we discovered that a self-help workbook can be aligned with evidence-based practice but only when the demands of each are fully understood.\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND: This keynote address is suited for attendees of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. \nCONFERENCE SPONSOR: British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)www.babcpconference.com/index.htm \nPRESENTER: Christine A. SUMMARY:Target Mood-Specific Skills Using Mind Over Mood 2 (UK)
DESCRIPTION:BELFAST\, NORTHERN IRELAND  – 1 day Pre-Conference Workshop at the 44th Annual BABCP Conference \nWorkshop Information available online from: http://www.babcpconference.com/programme/workshops_2016.htm \nTO REGISTER visit: http://www.babcpconference.com/registration/registration_2016.htm \nThere is an advantage to supplementing therapy with a workbook like Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition.\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nEvidence-based practice requires therapists to teach mood-specific skills and follow different treatment guidelines depending upon the mood targeted. Clients experience high rates of comorbidity and so there is an advantage to supplementing therapy with a workbook like Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition\, 2016 (MOM2) which addresses a variety of moods and teaches both general and mood-specific skills. This workshop shows therapists how to maintain fidelity to treatment protocols by assigning MOM2 chapters in different orders depending upon the moods addressed (depression\, anxiety\, anger\, guilt & shame). Participants learn evidence-based guidelines for client skills practice\, when certain interventions can be counter-therapeutic\, and a 3-step plan for relapse management. \nIn addition\, Padesky demonstrates how to navigate common obstacles that arise during use of: behavioral activation and thought records (depression); fear ladders\, exposure\, identification of safety behaviors\, and behavioral experiments (anxiety); assertive communication and forgiveness (anger); seriousness ratings\, responsibility pies\, reparations and self-forgiveness (guilt and shame). Guidelines are presented for how and when to add methods drawn from acceptance therapies\, mindfulness and positive psychology to these classic CBT approaches. \nMaintain fidelity to treatment protocols by assigning MOM2 chapters in different orders depending upon the moods addressed.\nNote: MOM2 is significantly different from the first edition of this book in both structure and content and includes new and wholly revised chapters as well as 25 new worksheets. Since this workshop primarily emphasizes this new material\, it is helpful both for therapists who have extensive experience with the first edition and those who don’t. Therapists who own MOM2 are encouraged to bring it to the workshop. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nAttendees learn to: \n\nIdentify skills empirically linked to improvement in depression and anxiety\nLink chapter reading order in MOM2 to treatment protocols\nFollow evidence-based guidelines for gratitude diaries\, mindfulness practice\, and other treatment methods\nConsider when a focus on forgiveness is therapeutic and when it is not\nAssist clients in following a 3-step plan for relapse management\n\nGuidelines are presented for how and when to add methods drawn from acceptance therapies\, mindfulness and positive psychology to these classic CBT approaches.\nWHO SHOULD ATTENDThis workshop is suited for therapists of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. Therapists with similar levels of experience are paired for role plays to maximize the learning value of these exercises. \nWORKSHOP SPONSORBritish Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)www.babcpconference.com/index.htm \nPRESENTERChristine A. SUMMARY:Best Practices in CBT for Depression & Suicide (UK)
DESCRIPTION:MANCHESTER\, ENGLAND  – 2 day / 12 hour workshop \nBROCHURE available online from: http://www.babcp.com/Training/Events.aspx \nTO REGISTER click on the following link: http://www.babcp.com/Training/Events.aspx \nDrawing on evidence-based methods pioneered by Aaron T. Beck and David Jobes\, Dr. Padesky illustrates interventions that can lower suicide risk\, reduce suicide attempts\, and increase client safety.\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nIt is encouraging that each decade brings fresh knowledge and new findings to advance the successful treatment of depression and suicide. After 35 years of teaching these topics\, Christine Padesky decided to take a fresh look at CBT for depression and suicide. She contacted several leading researchers to identify best practice guidelines; especially those that might be new to even experienced CBT therapists. \nAlthough “best practices” always include some familiar practices\, this workshop is designed for therapists at all experience levels. It emphasizes strategies to manage common obstacles encountered by therapists working with depressed and suicidal clients. For example\, Padesky’s clinical demonstrations and group exercises regarding behavioral activation teach principles and methods designed to target the inertia\, pessimism and overwhelming fatigue that often discourage depressed clients from engaging in activities. Instead of only teaching the basics of Thought Record use\, this workshop targets knowledge gaps and common errors made even by therapists who have used this method for many years: How do you identify and test images? What do you do if the hot thought is a core belief? What guideline teaches clients to find the most useful evidence that doesn’t support the hot thought? In addition\, Dr. Padesky integrates her seminal work on strengths-based CBT to illustrate how depressed and suicidal clients benefit when interventions build on existing strengths. \nAll therapists need to have a high level of skill in assessment of suicide risk. Most of the second day of the workshop teaches suicide assessment and interventions\, including methods for working with suicidal imagery. Past participants especially appreciated that structured interviews and interventions are demonstrated and practiced; key forms are included in the workshop handouts. Drawing on evidence-based methods pioneered by Aaron T. Beck and David Jobes\, Dr. Padesky illustrates interventions that can lower suicide risk\, reduce suicide attempts\, and increase client safety. \nCutting edge ideas for clinical practice\, all based in current research.\nIn today’s healthcare environment it is especially important to use therapist resources as efficiently as possible. \nLearn: \n\nTo focus on specific client symptoms to create “smarter” therapy\nHow spacing sessions can reduce the “discontinuation effect”\nWhen group therapy can be as effective as individual therapy\nTo structure CBT to maximize client participation\, skill development and relapse risk reduction\nTo choose interventions that are most likely to help in the time available\nHow to engage a client so he or she gives these interventions a full opportunity to help\nWhat interventions are most effective for pessimism\, hopelessness and negativity so these do not produce a drag on therapy’s effectiveness\n\nTo enhance learning\, participants observe skillful demonstrations by Dr. Padesky and then try out best practice methods in role plays and guided exercises. Detailed handouts help sustain learning post-workshop. While depression and suicide are serious topics\, this workshop is designed to be engaging\, fun and uplifting. It provides an evidence-based foundation for therapist practice so you can honestly communicate positive therapy expectations to your depressed clients. Join us for this state of the art workshop that reveals a wealth of “Best Practices in CBT for Depression and Suicide.” \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nAttendees learn to: \n\nUse a structured interview to assess suicide risk\nIndividualize suicide intervention plans\nEmploy 3 behavioral experiments to increase anti-depressant client activity\nUse client symptom measures to guide treatment and decision-making\nTest negative automatic thoughts in action as well as on paper\nIncorporate client strengths into treatment\n\nIn today’s healthcare environment it is especially important to use therapist resources as efficiently as possible.\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis workshop is suited for therapists of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. Therapists with similar levels of experience are paired for role plays to maximize the learning value of these exercises. \nWORKSHOP SPONSOR\nBritish Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) \nPRESENTER\nChristine A.
