SUMMARY:Anxiety Traps! CBT Antidotes (Turkey 2013)
DESCRIPTION:One of the features past participants of this workshop found most helpful was Dr. Padesky’s new framework of “danger disorders” and “coping disorders” which simplifies decision making about which interventions to choose even when the client experiences more than one type of anxiety disorder. \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols. More expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend. Learning treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nSimultaneous translation between English and Turkish will be available. \n \nAttendees from \n\nmajor cities to towns (from Edirne to Kars)\ngovernment\, private\, academic\, not-for-profit organizations\, and private practice\npsychology\, psychiatry\, nursing\, and education\ninternational attendees from Australia\, Indonesia\, Egypt\, and Greece\n\nWorkshop Objectives \n\nWrite out the anxiety equation\nRecognize common treatment principles for danger and coping disorders\nPractice induction methods used in treatment of panic\nTeach clients to address “what if?” GAD worries with action plans\nGive a rationale for “assertive defense of the self” with social anxiety\nObserve approaches that address post-traumatic memory gap\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Simplifying CBT for Personality Disorders: A NEW Paradigm (Canada 2013)
DESCRIPTION:CHATHAM\, CANADA \nThe NEW Paradigm places increased emphasis on client imagery\, use of client-generated metaphors\, kinesthetic awareness\, and a step-by-step therapy framework that is designed to help clients embrace change. It also incorporates many of Padesky’s signature therapy approaches: collaboration\, guided discovery\, integration of client strengths\, and methods for building client resilience. \nPadesky & Mooney’s NEW paradigm is a 4-stage model that is simple to understand and can be easily learned by therapists already familiar with CBT approaches for Axis I disorders such as depression\, anxiety\, eating disorders\, and other common presenting issues. \nRather than focusing on dysfunctional beliefs and behaviours\, methods taught target construction of new belief systems and interpersonal behaviour patterns. Behavioural experiments are used to build resilience in use of the NEW system. Concrete steps are outlined and demonstrated using client examples. Participants will practice applying skills in common clinical situations via structured role-plays. \nWhether you want to learn more about working with a specific personality disorder (e.g.\, borderline personality disorder)\, a particular type of impasse (e.g.\, avoidance\, rigidity or angry attacks)\, or your own reactions (e.g.\, irritation with a particular client)\, this workshop is designed to enhance your understanding and skills. \nPRESENTER: Christine A. SUMMARY:Strengths-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (USA 2012)
DESCRIPTION:SAN FRANCISCO\, CALIFORNIA  3 hour workshop \nOne of the “new” developments in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the emphasis on strengths at each stage of therapy. In a strengths-based approach\, experiential methods often trump analytic approaches because they facilitate expressions of the heart as well as the head. Some of the changes in CBT over the past three decades (i.e.\, an increased emphasis on behavioral experiments\, imagery\, and a greater appreciation of neuroscience) provide platforms for these “new” therapy methods. \nCome to this workshop to observe and experience strengths-based CBT in practice. \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Socratic Dialogue: Four Steps to Empowering Clients (USA 2012)
DESCRIPTION:SAN FRANCISCO\, CALIFORNIA   3 hour workshop \n\n\n\nSocratic dialogue has been a part of Beck’s cognitive therapy since its beginnings in the 1970s. Padesky outlined four steps in the Socratic Dialogue process twenty years ago that now serve as a foundation for learning this approach. This workshop illustrates these four steps with clinical demonstrations and practice exercises designed to help participants improve their mastery of the approach. Drawing ideas from her forthcoming book\, The Oxford Guide to Socratic Methods in CBT\, Padesky teaches the most recent perspectives on use of Socratic Dialogue in therapy including use of Socratic Dialogue in working with imagery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Simplifying Personality Disorder Treatment: A NEW Paradigm for CBT (Canada 2012)
DESCRIPTION:TORONTO\, CANADA \n\n\n\nThe NEW Paradigm places increased emphasis on client imagery\, use of client-generated metaphors\, kinesthetic awareness\, and a step-by-step therapy framework that is designed to help clients embrace change. It also incorporates many of Padesky’s signature therapy approaches: collaboration\, guided discovery\, integration of client strengths\, and methods for building client resilience. Padesky & Mooney’s NEW paradigm is a 4-stage model that is simple to understand and can be easily learned by therapists already familiar with CBT approaches for Axis I disorders such as depression\, anxiety\, eating disorders\, and other common presenting issues. Rather than focusing on dysfunctional beliefs and behaviours\, methods taught target construction of new belief systems and interpersonal behaviour patterns. Behavioural experiments are used to build resilience in use of the NEW system. Concrete steps are outlined and demonstrated using client examples. Participants will practice applying skills in common clinical situations via structured role-plays. Whether you want to learn more about working with a specific personality disorder (e.g.\, borderline personality disorder)\, a particular type of impasse (e.g.\, avoidance\, rigidity or angry attacks)\, or your own reactions (e.g.\, irritation with a particular client)\, this workshop is designed to enhance your understanding and skills. \n\n\n\nHere’s a brief description on YouTube \n\n\n\n I had a wonderful time and was enthralled by Christine’s communication skills\, knowledge and command of her subject.… I introduced the Old/New System to some of my clients this week and they are very enthusiastic about the possibility of constructing a new self. I work with men who have been through drug and alcohol addiction and are now clean and sober and facing up to the reality of life without the ‘benefit’ of mind/mood altering chemicals. I really appreciate and value Christine’s contribution in providing a new range of tools helping clients develop new and more beneficial strategies for living productive and meaningful lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSPONSOR: Cognitive Workshops \n\n\n\nARCHIVAL NOTE: After 24 years of sponsoring workshops\, Cognitive Workshops retired their business in January 2019 and closed down their website CognitiveWorkshops.com. SUMMARY:CBT Boot Camp: Building Core Clinical Competencies (Canada 2012)
DESCRIPTION:EDMONTON\, CANADA \n\n\n\nCBT Boot Camp is especially designed for novice and intermediate level CBT therapists who want to build and strengthen core clinical competencies as well as understand more clearly how these competencies function as the foundation for all CBT protocols. \n\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: as of October 2015\, we now offer Boot Camp 2.0 \n\n\n\nCOURSE OVERVIEW: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) offers a rapidly expanding collection of therapy protocols tailored to specific disorders. Learning these can be a daunting task for CBT therapists. Fortunately\, all CBT treatments involve core competencies (Roth & Pilling\, 2007). Once these competencies are mastered\, it becomes comparatively easy to learn protocols for specific client disorders. By the end of Boot Camp\, participants will achieve greater CBT fitness in the areas of: therapy structure and alliance\, client observation and self-monitoring\, awareness of safety behaviors versus good coping\, assigning and debriefing relevant homework\, and use of guided discovery methods (such as Socratic dialogue\, thought records\, and behavioral experiments). Dr. Padesky also demonstrates therapeutic responses to common therapy obstacles that often derail CBT progress. Following her demonstrations\, participants engage in “obstacle courses” which are exercises designed to help therapists apply the appropriate core competency in the face of these challenges. CBT Boot Camp features innovative participant exercises that approach familiar topics in novel ways. Workshop learning is enhanced through live and video clinical demonstrations\, structured participant exercises\, and handouts. As always\, this workshop is infused with Dr. Padesky’s signature warmth\, humour\, and an emphasis on practical clinical tips. \n\n\n\nREFERENCES: Roth\, A.D.\, & Pilling\, S. (2007). The competences required to deliver effective cognitive and behavioural therapy for people with depression and with anxiety disorders. London: Department of Health. \n\n\n\nTestimonials from Boot Camp 2011 in Calgary \n\n\n\nChristine is excellent! Wonderful techniques that are valuable in clinical practiceVery engaging presenter. Excellent balance of learning approaches offered. SUMMARY:Incorporating Strengths into Collaborative Case Conceptualization to Build Resilience (Switzerland 2012)
DESCRIPTION:GENEVA\, SWITZERLAND \n  \nPRESENTER: Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Padesky offers a step-by-step model to guide therapists’ treatment planning with complex cases\, especially when no single treatment model applies. This approach incorporates three guiding principles: (1) collaborative empiricism (2) three levels of conceptualization that evolve over the course of therapy\, and (3) incorporation of client strengths into each level of conceptualization so therapy is designed to both relieve distress and build resilience \nWhile this workshop demonstrates all three principles\, there is an emphasis on incorporation of client strengths into case conceptualization. Dr. Padesky models how to incorporate client culture\, personal interests\, imagery\, and metaphors into constructive\, strengths-based conceptual models. In addition to the opportunity to participate in structured exercises designed to develop relevant skills\, participants explore the implications of explicitly adding a strengths and resilience focus to CBT conceptualization and treatment. This multimedia program enhances learning via live and video clinical demonstrations\, structured role plays\, small group exercises\, and comprehensive handouts. \nDr. Padesky is internationally renowned for her ability to convey complex clinical processes with simplicity\, depth and humanity. In addition\, audiences appreciate her clinical excellence\, warmth\, clarity and humor. \nDon’t miss out! Learn this innovative approach that Aaron T. Beck calls “a gold standard for how to develop individualized case conceptualizations with our clients.” \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nDIFFERENTIATE between three levels of case conceptualization\nIMPROVE your awareness of how to search for “hidden” client strengths\nPRACTICE methods to bring strengths into client awareness\nCOLLABORATE with your clients to construct conceptualizations that incorporate strengths as well as vulnerabilities\nEXPLORE the added value of identifying client-generated metaphors and imagery\n\nRECOMMENDED READINGS \nKuyken\, W.\, Padesky\, C. SUMMARY:Constructing New Core Beliefs Master Class (UK 2012)
DESCRIPTION:Excerpt from the British Psychological Society summary of the event. \n\n\n\n Psychotherapists from across the UK\, and even from as far as Australia\, travelled to the University of Derby\, United Kingdom on 18 May 2012 for a Master Class on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) from Dr Christine Padesky. She spoke on ‘Constructing New Core Beliefs’ to an audience of over 150 practising psychotherapists and University of Derby students. \n\n\n\nA protégée of the founder of CBT\, Aaron T. Beck\, Dr Padesky presented 25 workshops with him at the outset of her career. Since then she has spoken to over 40\,000 professionals worldwide and her Mind Over Mood has been voted the most influential cognitive therapy book of all time in one poll. She is a co-founder of the Center for Cognitive Therapy in California. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Padesky said: “I was delighted to travel to Derby and meet with the students and practitioners who had travelled so far. I hope that the delegates now have a greater understanding of core beliefs and some new skills to use with their clients.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues
