SUMMARY:Best Practices: CBT for Depression & Suicide (Canada 2015)
DESCRIPTION:CHATHAM\, CANADA  – 2 day /12 hour workshop \nBROCHURE (PDF format). To view\, click on Chatham Best Practices Brochure \nTO REGISTER contact Melissa Weber by telephone at +1 519-436-6100 x 2228 \n  \nDRAWING ON EVIDENCE-BASED METHODS PIONEERED BY AARON T. BECK AND DAVID JOBES\, DR. PADESKY ILLUSTRATES INTERVENTIONS THAT CAN LOWER SUICIDE RISK\, REDUCE SUICIDE ATTEMPTS\, AND INCREASE CLIENT SAFETY\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThis workshop is designed for therapists at all experience levels. It emphasizes strategies to manage common obstacles encountered by therapists working with depressed and suicidal clients. For example\, Padesky’s clinical demonstrations and group exercises regarding behavioral activation teach principles and methods designed to target the inertia\, pessimism and overwhelming fatigue that often discourage depressed clients from engaging in activities. Instead of only teaching the basics of Thought Record use\, this workshop targets knowledge gaps and common errors made even by therapists who have used this method for many years: How do you identify and test images? What do you do if the hot thought is a core belief? What guideline teaches clients to find the most useful evidence that doesn’t support the hot thought? In addition\, Dr. Padesky integrates her seminal work on strengths-based CBT to illustrate how depressed and suicidal clients benefit when interventions build on existing strengths. \nAll therapists need to have a high level of skill in assessment of suicide risk. Most of the second day of the workshop teaches suicide assessment and interventions\, including methods for working with suicidal imagery. Past participants especially appreciated that structured interviews and interventions are demonstrated and practiced; key forms are included in the workshop handouts. \nCUTTING EDGE IDEAS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE\, ALL BASED IN CURRENT RESEARCH\nTherapists want to help depressed and suicidal clients feel better as quickly as possible. To help you do this\, Dr. Padesky presents effective cutting edge ideas for clinical practice\, all based in current research. This master clinician reveals a wealth of Best Practices. Join in on this new state-of-the-art workshop. \nLEARN \n\nTo focus on specific client symptoms to create “smarter” therapy\nHow spacing sessions can reduce the “discontinuation effect”\nWhen group therapy can be as effective as individual therapy\n To structure CBT to maximize client participation\, skill development and relapse risk reduction\nTo choose interventions that are most likely to help in the time available\nHow to engage a client so he or she gives these interventions a full opportunity to help\, and\nWhat interventions are most effective for pessimism\, hopelessness and negativity so these do not produce a drag on therapy’s effectiveness.\n\nTo enhance learning\, participants observe skillful demonstrations by Dr. Padesky and then try out best practice methods in role plays and guided exercises. Detailed handouts help sustain learning post-workshop. \nMULTIMODAL LEARNING \n\nCreative and engaging PowerPoint slides\nSkillful demonstrations\nRole plays\nGuided exercises\nDetailed handouts with key questionnaires provided\n\nEVIDENCE-BASED\, ENGAGING\, UPLIFTING \nWhile depression and suicide are serious topics\, this workshop is designed to be engaging\, fun and uplifting. It provides an evidence-based foundation for therapist practice so you can honestly communicate positive therapy expectations to your depressed clients. \n“We hope you will attend this state of the art workshop that reveals a wealth of “best practices in CBT for depression and suicide”\nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nAttendees learn to: \n\nUse a structured interview to assess suicide risk\nIndividualize suicide intervention plans\nEmploy 3 behavioral experiments to increase anti-depressant client activity\nUse client symptom measures to guide treatment and decision-making\nTest negative automatic thoughts in action as well as on paper\nIncorporate client strengths into treatment\n\nWORKSHOP CO-SPONSORS\nChatham-Kent Mental Health and Addictions Program (MHAP)\nErie-St.Clair Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) \nPRESENTER\nChristine A. SUMMARY:When Life Gives You Lemons ... Strengths-Based CBT (USA 2014)
DESCRIPTION:PHILADELPHIA\, PENNSYLVANIA: Three hour workshop presented at the 48th Annual Convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) \nWorkshop 7: When Life Gives You Lemons . . . Use Strengths-Based CBT’s Four-Step Model to Build Resilience \nRequires a Basic level of familiarity with the material \nPRESENTERS: Christine A. Padesky\, PhD & Kathleen A. Mooney\, PhD / Center for Cognitive Therapy\, Huntington Beach\, California \nDESCRIPTION: “When life gives you lemons\, make lemonade.” You’ve probably heard this phrase so many times that it seems trite\, but proverbs like this one point out the importance of being resilient in the face of life’s challenges. Therapists know giving advice does not change behavior. So how can a therapist help clients become more resilient in the face of adversity? \nThis workshop teaches a 4-step model that helps clients build a Personal Model of Resilience (PMR). It is a model that is easily integrated with classic CBT approaches and other evidence-based therapies. \nDrawing on the principles of strengths-based CBT\, five key methods are highlighted: \n\nHow to identify and integrate strengths into CBT\nWhen and how to introduce resilience\nThe timing and rationale for therapeutic smiling\nUse of imagery and metaphor\nThe importance of silence for fostering client creativity\n\nThis workshop is loaded with clinical demonstrations\, structured participant role-plays\, and question-and-answer segments that clarify the theory\, rationale\, methods\, and application of a PMR. Common therapy pitfalls are identified along with recommended alternative approaches. \nDISCLAIMER: NO ACTUAL LEMONS WILL BE INJURED IN THE COURSE OF THIS WORKSHOP \nYOU WILL LEARN TO: \n\nIDENTIFY areas of strengths that relate to resilience\nPRACTICE Socratic methods to elicit client-generated imagery and metaphors of resilience\nBUILD & APPLY a personal model of resilience (PMR) to create win-win responses to acute and chronic life challenges\n\nACTION ITEM PRE-WORKSHOP\nParticipants are strongly encouraged to download and read Padesky and Mooney’s 2012 paper before attending the workshop. Greater familiarity with this material will foster increased depth of workshop learning (i.e.\, the more you know\, the more you will learn). \nRECOMMENDED READINGS\nMooney\, K.A.\, & Padesky\, C.A. SUMMARY:Strengths-Based CBT: Show Me! (Canada 2014)
DESCRIPTION:TORONTO\, CANADA – 2 day workshop. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\n \nThis new “Show Me!” workshop series takes you inside a master clinician’s mind during clinical demonstrations\, with plenty of time after to debrief\, discuss\, and try it for yourself. How often do you watch a master clinician at work and wonder\, “How did she know to ask that?” “Why did she do that?” Past workshop participants frequently comment that some of the best learning in Christine Padesky’s workshops comes from her clinical demonstrations. Listening to this feedback\, Dr. Padesky decided to structure a new workshop series around clinical demonstrations. In this first workshop of her new “Show Me!” series\, she reveals what is going through her mind during demonstrations of Strengths-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (SB-CBT). \nWHAT IS STRENGTHS-BASED CBT?\n \nOver the past decades\, Padesky and Mooney have introduced a number of clinical innovations into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including use of constructive language\, four stages of Socratic dialogue\, therapeutic use of smiling\, positive imagery\, and methods to construct new beliefs and behavioral patterns. These contributions are now integrated into a unified model they call Strengths-Based CBT which has three areas of application: (1) integrate S-B CBT with classic CBT\, (2) help clients become more resilient using a four-step model\, and (3) create a New Paradigm for clients with chronic problems. \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Best Practices: CBT for Depression & Suicide (Canada 2014)
DESCRIPTION:CALGARY\, CANADA  – 2 day workshop \nDrawing on evidence-based methods pioneered by Aaron T. Beck and David Jobes\, Dr Padesky illustrates interventions that can lower suicide risk\, reduce suicide attempts\, and increase client safety. \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nThis workshop\, designed for therapists at all experience levels\, emphasizes strategies to manage common obstacles encountered by therapists working with depressed and suicidal clients. \nFor example\, Padesky’s clinical demonstrations and group exercises regarding behavioral activation teach principles and methods designed to target the inertia\, pessimism and overwhelming fatigue that often discourage depressed clients from engaging in activities. \nCUTTING EDGE IDEAS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE\, ALL BASED IN CURRENT RESEARCH \nTherapists want to help depressed and suicidal clients feel better as quickly as possible. To help you do this\, Dr. Padesky presents effective cutting edge ideas for clinical practice\, all based in current research. This master clinician reveals a wealth of Best Practices. Join in on this new state-of-the-art workshop. \nMULTIMODAL LEARNING \n\nCreative and engaging PowerPoint slides\nSkillful demonstrations\nRole plays\nGuided exercises\nDetailed handouts with key questionnaires provided\n\nTo enhance learning\, participants observe skillful demonstrations by Dr. Padesky and then try out best practice methods in role plays and guided exercises. Detailed handouts help sustain learning post-workshop. \nEVIDENCE-BASED\, ENGAGING\, UPLIFTING \nWhile depression and suicide are serious topics\, this workshop is designed to be engaging\, fun and uplifting. It provides an evidence-based foundation for therapist practice so you can honestly communicate positive therapy expectations to your depressed clients. \n“We hope you will attend this state of the art workshop that reveals a wealth of “best practices in CBT for depression and suicide” \nLEARN \n\nTo focus on specific client symptoms to create “smarter” therapy\nHow spacing sessions can reduce the “discontinuation effect”\nWhen group therapy can be as effective as individual therapy\nTo structure CBT to maximize client participation\, skill development and relapse risk reduction\nTo choose interventions that are most likely to help in the time available\nHow to engage a client so he or she gives these interventions a full opportunity to help\, and\nWhat interventions are most effective for pessimism\, hopelessness and negativity so these do not produce a drag on therapy’s effectiveness.\n\nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nAttendees learn to: \n\nUse a structured interview to assess suicide risk\nIndividualize suicide intervention plans\nEmploy 3 behavioral experiments to increase anti-depressant client activity\nUse client symptom measures to guide treatment and decision-making\nTest negative automatic thoughts in action as well as on paper\nIncorporate client strengths into treatment\n\nBROCHURE available online from: http://ucalgary.ca/pd/Depression (link inactive) \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:CBT for Depression & Social Anxiety: Evidence-Based Methods and Clinical Innovations (DENMARK 2014)
DESCRIPTION:COPENHAGEN\, DENMARK \nDESCRIPTION: Anxiety and depression are common human experiences. When these become severe and disabling\, therapists want to be sure to use the most effective treatments to help clients quickly and also reduce relapse. This 2-day workshop by Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D.\, world-renowned cognitive behavioral therapy instructor\, demonstrates interventions effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety\, with a special focus on one of the most common forms of anxiety\, social anxiety. Attend this workshop to observe and practice methods known to effectively treat depression and anxiety. Enjoy Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humor\, and optimism while you learn how to more effectively help your clients. \nSPONSOR: The School for Cognitive & Behavioural Therapies\, Mental Health Services \n\nFor Online information & registration: visit https://rhp.plan2learn.dk/KursusValg.aspx?id=24779\nOr use search term “Padesky” in their online Catalog: https://rhp.plan2learn.dk\n\nORGANIZER & CONTACT INFO: Irene Oestrich <Irene.Oestrich@regionh.dk> \nTOP 8 REASONS TO COME TO THIS WORKSHOP \nIf you dread working with depressed clients\, ]you will learn how depression treatment can be enjoyable\, rather than depressing \nIf you work with depressed clients but don’t use CBT\, most depressed people relapse; Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies have the lowest relapse rates \nIf you already use CBT for depression but have trouble getting client participation\, this workshop shows how to engage depressed clients in therapy \nIf you don’t use CBT for social anxiety\, because this approach is fun to learn and effective for clients \nIf you use classic CBT for social anxiety and some of your clients don’t improve\, ADS helps clients learn to cope with criticism and rejection\, which can make all the difference. ADS = Assertive Defense of the Self” \nIf you appreciate clear\, articulate explanations and demonstrations of therapy methods\, Dr. Padesky is renowned for the quality and depth of her teaching \nIf you learn best through a combination of listening\, watching\, and practicing\, this workshop includes live demonstrations\, videos\, and structured skills practice \nIf you have a sense of humor\, a keen interest in learning\, and dedication to your profession\, everyone will benefit from your participation in this intensive & fun learning event \nPROGRAM INFORMATION \nOn Day 1\, participants learn how to effectively use behavioral activation and thought records to help depressed clients become more active and test out negative beliefs. Dr. Padesky emphasizes treatment methods that have been empirically shown to reduce relapse. She models language\, attitudes and metaphors that encourage client engagement and engender hope even when clients are pessimistic and hopeless. Common traps that interfere with treatment are highlighted with demonstrations of how to effectively and collaboratively manage them. Differences between depression and grief are highlighted. \nOn Day 2\, Padesky shows how anxiety disorder treatment is similar and different from depression treatment and addresses comorbidity issues. Unlike depression treatment\, each anxiety disorder has a specific treatment protocol which is different from the others. Despite these differences\, common treatment principles exist which are reflected in each protocol. As an in-depth illustration of anxiety treatments\, Padesky teaches a method she pioneered for social anxiety\, “Assertive Defense of the Self.” \nMany cognitive behavioral therapies for social anxiety emphasize tests of client fears that other people will be critical and rejecting. Padesky has argued that an emphasis on the low likelihood of negative reactions from others misses the opportunity to expose clients to what they fear: criticism. Exposure to fears with coping practice is a central principle of effective treatment for all anxiety disorders. Her innovative approach uses scripted and unscripted role plays to guide socially anxious clients in the development of coping skills and confidence to manage criticism and rejection. This workshop teaches each stage of Assertive Defense of the Self (ADS)\, highlighting common therapist errors and beliefs that interfere with successful treatment outcome. Those who have attended Dr. Padesky’s workshops in the past are familiar with her signature workshop approaches. After she demonstrates key therapy methods via live demonstrations or video\, participants have an opportunity to bring their learning to life in carefully designed experiential exercises. These are framed by her clear didactic teaching\, organized handouts\, and rich clinical discussions. \nLearning unfolds in simple steps which layer over the course of the workshop to yield a sophisticated and nuanced treatment approach by the end. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to \n\nUse language and the therapy relationship to enhance client engagement in therapy\nHelp depressed clients increase the three types of activity empirically linked to positive therapy outcomes\nEmploy guided discovery to help clients effectively test out thoughts on a 7-column thought record\nDebrief homework assignments to maximize client learning\nDescribe the anxiety equation\nUse a targeted interview to identify feared criticisms and “assertive defense” responses for social anxiety\nPractice Assertive Defense of the Self (ADS) from both client and therapist perspectives\nDesign relevant behavioral experiments for out of session practice\nIntegrate ADS with other empirically supported therapies for social anxiety\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

Changes in CBT over the past three decades provide platforms for “new” therapy methods such as constructive use of imagery\, client-generated metaphors\, and therapeutic use of smiling and silence. New therapy models\, to (a) build resilience and (b) treat personality disorders by constructing new interpersonal beliefs and behaviors\, foreshadow a trend toward CBT approaches that more explicitly help people thrive in the face of life challenges. \nEvents at this year’s Evolution will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center\, and the neighboring Hilton and Marriott Hotels. \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Simplifying Personality Disorder Treatment: A NEW Paradigm for CBT (Canada 2013)
DESCRIPTION:CALGARY\, CANADA 2 day / 12 hour workshop\nThe NEW Paradigm places increased emphasis on client imagery\, use of client-generated metaphors\, kinesthetic awareness\, and a step-by-step therapy framework that is designed to help clients embrace change. It also incorporates many of Padesky’s signature therapy approaches: collaboration\, guided discovery\, integration of client strengths\, and methods for building client resilience. \nPadesky & Mooney’s NEW paradigm is a 4-stage model that is simple to understand and can be easily learned by therapists already familiar with CBT approaches for Axis I disorders such as depression\, anxiety\, eating disorders\, and other common presenting issues. \nRather than focusing on dysfunctional beliefs and behaviours\, methods taught target construction of new belief systems and interpersonal behaviour patterns. Behavioural experiments are used to build resilience in use of the NEW system. Concrete steps are outlined and demonstrated using client examples. Participants will practice applying skills in common clinical situations via structured role-plays. \nWhether you want to learn more about working with a specific personality disorder (e.g.\, borderline personality disorder)\, a particular type of impasse (e.g.\, avoidance\, rigidity or angry attacks)\, or your own reactions (e.g.\, irritation with a particular client)\, this workshop is designed to enhance your understanding and skills. \nPRESENTER: Christine A. SUMMARY:Prescription for Panic: CBT (Nevada USA 2013)
DESCRIPTION:LAS VEGAS\, NEVADA  90 min presentation \nIn this 90 minute clinical presentation\, Dr. Padesky describes each of the essential stages of effective CBT for panic disorder and provides video demonstrations. With characteristic clarity\, warmth\, and humor\, Padesky makes the case for why CBT should usually be the first “prescription for panic.” \nWhy should CBT usually be the first “prescription for panic”?\n \n\nAccording to American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines\, pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are both first line recommended treatments for panic disorder\nHowever\, when length of treatment and relapse are considered\, CBT has been shown in numerous randomized controlled outcome studies to be superior to pharmacological treatments\nDespite these empirical findings\, many psychiatrists and physicians lack the knowledge and skill to either competently deliver CBT for panic disorder or describe it well enough to patients to facilitate a successful referral\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Constructing New Core Beliefs: A CBT Master Class (UK 2013)
DESCRIPTION:HULL\, UNITED KINGDOM \nJoin Dr. Padesky in this unique Master Class to expand your understanding and skills for working with client core beliefs. \nSponsor’s website \nBROCHURE: Sponsor’s brochure link no longer valid once event ends (http://www2.hull.ac.uk/fhsc/newsandevents/events/constructingnewbeliefs.aspx) \n\nCognitive behavioral therapists are usually quite adept at working with automatic thoughts and underlying assumptions\, helped by the relative elasticity of these levels of beliefs. Core beliefs are much more challenging to shift. And because the time frame for modifying core beliefs is usually months rather than hours or weeks\, it can be difficult to know if therapy interventions are helpful or serving to entrench maladaptive beliefs. \nAs a special benefit to participants in this Master Class\, Dr. Padesky encourages participants to submit questions ahead of time. While it may not be possible in the time available to answer all questions\, she will organize the Master Class to address as many participant concerns as possible regarding constructing new core beliefs with CBT. \nThroughout the day\, Dr. Padesky will demonstrate methods highlighted in live and video role play demonstrations. She will comment on participant role play practice exercises and offer her keen insights regarding common errors therapists make when working with core beliefs and alternative clinical responses that offer a higher likelihood of effectiveness. \nDr. Padesky plans to emphasize a number of themes: \n\nWhen and when not to address core beliefs in CBT\nThe importance of the therapeutic alliance when working with tightly-held beliefs\nThe power of constructive language\nUse of Socratic dialogue\nThe art of collaboration when therapists and clients operate from divergent belief systems\n\nChristine A. Padesky\, PhD\, is one of the world’s leading cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) experts and a pioneer in core belief change methods. Over the past 25 years\, she has introduced creative variations on common core belief methods (e.g.\, core belief log\, continuum\, psychodrama) and elaborated her theory and rationale for why it is more important to construct new core beliefs in CBT than it is to dispute or weaken maladaptive core beliefs. \nRecommended Readings \n\nPadesky\, C.A. SUMMARY:CBT Boot Camp: Building Core Clinical Competencies (Denmark 2013)
DESCRIPTION:COPENHAGEN\, DENMARK \nSponsor’s Website (in Danish) \nCBT Boot Camp is especially designed for novice and intermediate level CBT therapists who want to build and strengthen core clinical competencies as well as understand more clearly how these competencies function as the foundation for all CBT protocols. \nSponsored by: Skolen for Kognitiv Adfærdsterapi\, Region Hovedstadens Psykiatri \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) offers a rapidly expanding collection of therapy protocols tailored to specific disorders. Learning these can be a daunting task for CBT therapists. Fortunately\, all CBT treatments involve core competencies (Roth & Pilling\, 2007). Once these competencies are mastered\, it becomes comparatively easy to learn protocols for specific client disorders. \nBy the end of Boot Camp\, participants will achieve greater CBT fitness in the areas of: therapy structure and alliance\, client observation and self-monitoring\, awareness of safety behaviors versus good coping\, assigning and debriefing relevant homework\, and use of guided discovery methods (such as Socratic dialogue\, thought records\, and behavioral experiments). \nDr. Padesky also demonstrates therapeutic responses to common therapy obstacles that often derail CBT progress. Following her demonstrations\, participants engage in “obstacle courses” which are exercises designed to help therapists apply the appropriate core competency in the face of these challenges. \nCBT Boot Camp features innovative participant exercises that approach familiar topics in novel ways. SUMMARY:Anxiety Traps! CBT Antidotes (UK 2013)
DESCRIPTION:DERBY\, UNITED KINGDOM \nHear a brief description on YouTube \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols\, more expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend. Learning treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: Clients often feel trapped in anxiety. This is because common anxiety coping strategies such as avoidance and safety behaviors unwittingly maintain anxiety disorders. Unfortunately\, it is also the case that some common therapy practices designed to relieve client distress instead trap therapists and clients in ineffective cycles of therapy. \nLeading cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) instructor Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D. teaches principles and methods that help therapists and clients avoid both types of anxiety traps. Padesky teaches which CBT therapy interventions are most helpful for each type of anxiety disorder and when using these same methods can actually prolong anxiety treatment. \nOne of the features past participants of this workshop found most helpful was Dr. Padesky’s new framework of “danger disorders” and “coping disorders” which simplifies decision making about which interventions to choose even when the client experiences more than one type of anxiety disorder. \nThose who have attended Dr. Learning unfolds in simple steps which layer over the course of the workshop to yield a sophisticated and nuanced treatment approach by the end. \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols\, more expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend. Learning treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nAttend this workshop to learn principles underpinning anxiety treatment methods and to practice the skills required to effectively use CBT anxiety protocols. Enjoy this workshop for all Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humour\, and optimism which help you learn to treat your clients’ anxiety disorders more effectively. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \n\nWrite out the anxiety equation\nRecognize common treatment principles for danger and coping disorders\nPractice induction methods used in treatment of panic\nTeach clients to address “what if?” GAD worries with action plans\nGive a rationale for “assertive defense of the self” with social anxiety\nObserve approaches that address post-traumatic memory gap\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues
