SUMMARY:A 4-stage Model of Socratic Dialogue to Improve Therapy Effectiveness (2026 WCCBT)
DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. \n\n\n\n\n\nChristine A. Padesky Workshop 17 – 3 hours\n\n\n\n“A 4-stage Model of Socratic Dialogue to Improve Therapy Effectiveness“ \n\n\n\n11th World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies Congress \n\n\n\nDon’t miss this training opportunity to learn best practices directly from Christine Padesky\, the innovator of the 4-Stage Model of Socratic Dialogue. \n\n\n\nDESCRIPTIONDo you sometimes struggle with common clinical traps such as clients not doing between session activities\, in session avoidance\, or rigid beliefs? Christine Padesky demonstrates how her 4-stage Model of Socratic Dialogue can help you effectively navigate these types of issues in ways that maximize client learning and elicit curiosity and discovery. \n\n\n\nResearch suggests clients may prefer Socratic therapy methods over didactic ones (Heiniger\, Clark\, & Egan\, 2018). Skillful therapist use of Socratic questioning has been linked to better therapy outcomes for both depression and PTSD (Braun et al.\, 2015; Farmer et al.\, 2017). \n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, therapists cite guided discovery therapy methods such as Socratic questioning as the most difficult therapy skills to master (Waltman\, Hall\, McFarr\, Beck\, & Creed\, 2017). Padesky’s 4-Stage Model of Socratic Dialogue (Padesky & Kennerley\, 2023) makes the processes of effective guided discovery much clearer and provides a structure to help therapists develop these skills more quickly and apply them artfully. \n\n\n\nParticipants learn how to: (1) Ask relevant informational questions\, (2) listen empathically\, and (3) make written summaries so that clients can answer (4) analytical and synthesizing questions. \n\n\n\nThis workshop includes interactive discussion and clinical demonstrations that marry structure with a client-centered\, collaborative\, strengths-based therapy approach. \n\n\n\nWORKSHOP OUTLINE \n\n\n\n\nResearch on Socratic Dialogue\n\n\n\nDemonstration: 4-stage Model of Socratic Dialogue (SD)\n\nInformational Questions\n\n\n\nEmpathic Listening\n\n\n\nWritten Summaries\n\n\n\nAnalytical & Synthesizing Questions\n\n\n\n\n\nTherapy Application #1 Group Practice: Debriefing learning experiences with Socratic Dialogue\n\nEmphasize learning not outcomes\n\n\n\nFocus on client discovery\n\n\n\n\n\nTherapy Application #2: Demo using Socratic Dialogue to test rigid beliefs\n\nImportance of written summary\n\n\n\nImpact of curiosity and discovery rather than trying to change client’s mind\n\n\n\n\n\nTherapy Application #3: How to use Socratic Dialogue for session summaries and as a bridge to future learning\n\n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\n\nLIST the four stages of Socratic dialogue\n\n\n\nDESCRIBE three common circumstances in which Socratic Dialogue is likely to be utilized in therapy sessions\n\n\n\nIDENTIFY two reasons that written summaries that use clients’ exact words can be one of the most powerful therapy interventions you can make\n\n\n\n\nChristine A. SUMMARY:These Once Innovative Ideas Now Need to be Radically Applied (2026 WCCBT)
DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. \n\n\n\n\n\nChristine A. Padesky Keynote Address – 1 hour\n\n\n\n“These Once Innovative Ideas Now Need to be Radically Applied“ \n\n\n\n11th World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies Congress \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTIONMany CBT therapists\, researchers and instructors today would describe themselves as client-centered\, collaborative and strengths-based. Padesky argues that we can elevate our effectiveness by applying these practices radically instead of perfunctorily. \n\n\n\nFor example\, when we practice Strengths-Based CBT more radically\, it transforms everything: the issues we discuss\, the goals we ask our clients to set\, and the methods we use to encourage clients to use their strengths for life transformation. Client-centered collaboration\, when radically applied\, considers with genuine interest: Socratic dialogues that lead to unexpected places\, client-generated conceptualizations that contradict accepted paradigms\, and novel interventions that resonate with client cultures. \n\n\n\nPadesky has been modelling radically client-centered\, radically collaborative and radically Strengths-Based CBT for nearly 50 years in her therapy\, world-wide teaching\, and video clinical demonstrations. Most of her therapy innovations resulted from her application of one or more of these three approaches. Many were considered radical at first. \n\n\n\nExamples of her innovations include: \n\n\n\n\n7-Column Thought Record (Padesky\, 1983)\n\n\n\nAssertive Defense of the Self as a treatment for social anxiety (Padesky\, 1997)\n\n\n\nStrengths-Based CBT: A 4-step model to build resilience (Padesky & Mooney\, 2012)\n\n\n\nCollaborative Case Conceptualization (Padesky\, 2020)\n\n\n\n4-Stage Model of Socratic Dialogue (Padesky & Kennerley\, 2023)\n\n\n\nMind Over Mood (Greenberger & Padesky\, 1995; 2016)\n\n\n\n5-Part Model – when introduced in 1986 was the first CBT model to highlight the role of environment (Padesky & Mooney\, 1990)\n\n\n\n\nPadesky illustrates how radically applying client-centered\, collaborative\, and Strengths-Based CBT can improve our effectiveness. \n\n\n\nConsidering these approaches more radically also offers a rich tapestry of topics for untapped areas of research that can create opportunities for generations to come. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\n\nNAME one way in which radically client-centered\, collaborative and Strengths-Based CBT differs from standard CBT practices\n\n\n\nANALYZE the impact of adding environmental context to CBT models\n\n\n\nDESCRIBE two ways to incorporate radically client-centered\, collaborative\, and Strengths-Based CBT into your own clinical practice\, teaching\, or research\n\n\n\n\nChristine A. DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nThe evolution of Cognitive Behavior Therapies (CBT) has often involved a tug-of-war between those who emphasize behavioral interventions\, those who focus on cognitive inquiries and dialogues\, and those who advocate for mindfulness and acceptance. Padesky shares her current integrative vision of CBT as a collaborative quest for discovery that can incorporate all these perspectives. In her approach\, therapists emphasize action therapy methods to elicit emotion\, full body experiencing\, beliefs\, imagery\, behaviors and values within interpersonal and cultural contexts in order to foster deeper learning and change. \n\n\n\nPadesky offers a collaborative\, strengths-based model in which the full power of psychotherapy is revealed when action therapy methods and Socratic dialogue interact in a dance of equals. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSPONSOR: Psy-so! SUMMARY:Engaging Clients in Collaborative Case Conceptualization (Canada 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Workshop\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2 HOUR VIRTUAL FEATURED WORKSHOP for the 13th Annual Conference of theCanadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (CACBT) \n\n\n\nPRESENTED by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nDESCRIPTIONCollaborative case conceptualization is designed to enhance client understanding\, empowerment\, and treatment adherence. Padesky demonstrates a model she calls “Box/Arrow In/Arrow Out” to help clients identify triggers and maintenance factors for specific issues of concern. \n\n\n\nThe “Box/Arrow In/Arrow Out” model can incorporate cultural factors including experiences of cultural marginalization or trauma. This model is illustrated via live demonstrations with participant case examples along with discussion of how client strengths can be linked with the treatment plans that follow. Dr. Padesky details the steps involved and highlights standard therapist questions and statements that can be used to prompt client active engagement in co-construction of this model. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\n\nDESCRIBE the steps used to collaboratively construct a Box/Arrow In/Arrow Out case conceptualization\n\n\n\nIDENTIFY questions that can be used to incorporate cultural experiences into a case conceptualization\n\n\n\nASK questions to help clients identify whether responses serve as coping or maintenance factors\n\n\n\n\nRECOMMENDED READING IN ADVANCE OF WORKSHOP \n\n\n\nPadesky\, C.A. SUMMARY:Dialogues for Discovery: Socratic Dialogue in Action (Canada 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Daylight Time. Event time at Oakville is 12noon to 3pm Eastern Daylight Time \n\n\n\n3 HOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOP presented by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nDESCRIPTIONOur best psychotherapy sessions are often the ones in which clients make new discoveries that prove to be transformational\, even in small ways. Socratic dialogue is one of the most effective ways to increase the likelihood of client discovery. Padesky offers live demonstrations of her 4-Stage Model of Socratic Dialogue (Padesky\, 1993\, 2019\, 2020) along with guiding principles for its effective use. Recent research suggests clients may prefer Socratic therapy methods over didactic ones (Heiniger\, Clark\, & Egan\, 2018). In addition\, skillful therapist use of Socratic methods has been linked to better therapy outcomes (Braun et al.\, 2015; Farmer et al.\, 2017). Participants are encouraged to present case examples for live demonstrations. These examples can include work with anger or other moods\, personality issues\, challenges of working with imagery\, etc. Don’t miss this training opportunity to learn best practices from one of the world’s leading experts on Socratic Dialogue. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\n\n\nLIST the four stages of Socratic dialogueDESCRIBE three common circumstances in which Socratic Dialogue is likely to be utilized in CBT sessionsIDENTIFY two common therapist behaviors that lead clients to say “Yes\, but…” and describe what therapists can do to minimize the likelihood of this response.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Target Mood-specific Skills Using Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Ed (Canada 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. Event time at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is 1:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time. \n\n\n\n3 HOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOP presented by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nEvidence-based practice requires therapists to teach mood-specific skills and follow different treatment guidelines depending upon the mood targeted. Clients experience high rates of comorbidity and so there is an advantage to supplementing therapy with a workbook like Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition\, 2016 (MOM2) which addresses a variety of moods and teaches both general and mood-specific skills. This workshop shows therapists how to maintain fidelity to treatment protocols by assigning specific MOM2 chapters in different orders depending upon the moods addressed (depression\, anxiety\, anger\, guilt & shame). Participants learn evidence-based guidelines for client skills practice\, when certain interventions can be counter-therapeutic\, methods for navigating common obstacles\, and a 3-step plan for relapse management. \n\n\n\nTherapists who own MOM2 are encouraged to bring it to the workshop.\n\n\n\nRECOMMENDED READING \n\n\n\n\nGreenberger\, D.\, & Padesky\, C.A. SUMMARY:Action-Packed CBT (Canada 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. Event time at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is 1:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time. \n\n\n\n3 HOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOP presented by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nLasting learning and change are more likely to result from active experience and doing than from book knowledge alone. If we apply this idea to psychotherapy\, we need to consider that talk therapy by itself is not always the best therapy. The phrase\, “action-packed CBT” describes a therapeutic approach that combines talk with active learning experiences embedded into each session. Action methods demonstrated in this workshop include: interactive writing/drawing\, imagery\, role playing\, and behavioral experiments used to test out beliefs and to try out new behaviors. \n\n\n\nRECOMMENDED READINGPadesky\, C.A. DESCRIPTION:Time zone shown is for Pacific Time. Event time at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is 1:00 – 4:00 pm Eastern Time. \n\n\n\n3 HOUR VIRTUAL WORKSHOP presented by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD \n\n\n\nThis workshop demonstrates two simple forms of case conceptualization that can be collaboratively developed in session with clients\, using client language. Collaborative case conceptualization is designed to enhance client understanding\, empowerment\, and treatment adherence. The 5-part model can be used with any combination of client issues to broadly describe current difficulties in terms of links among thoughts\, behaviors\, physical reactions\, moods\, and environmental/situational factors. A second model called “Box/Arrow In/Arrow Out” helps clients identify triggers and maintenance factors for specific issues of concern. Dr. Padesky details the steps involved in each approach and highlights standard therapist questions and statements that can be used to prompt client engagement in co-construction of these models. \n\n\n\nRECOMMENDED READINGPadesky\, C.A. Padesky\, PhD (Virtual Only)Presented at the 50th Annual Conference of the British Association for Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapies Collaborative\, strengths-based model\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\n\n\nThe evolution of Cognitive Behavior Therapies (CBT) has often involved a tug-of-war between those who emphasize behavioral interventions\, those who focus on cognitive inquiries and dialogues\, and those who advocate for mindfulness and acceptance. Padesky offers a collaborative\, strengths-based model in which the full power of psychotherapy is revealed when action therapy methods and Socratic dialogue interact in a dance of equals. \n\n\n\nPRESENTER BIO\n\n\n\nChristine A. SUMMARY:Action and Dialogue in Psychotherapy: A Dance of Equals (Israel 2022)

Padesky\, PhDEvent: The Israeli Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Psychotherapy Annual ConventionLength of Program: 90 minutes\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\n\n\nThe evolution of Cognitive Behavior Therapies (CBT) has often involved a tug-of-war between those who emphasize behavioral interventions\, those who focus on cognitive inquiries and dialogues\, and those who advocate for mindfulness and acceptance. Padesky offers a collaborative\, strengths-based model in which the full power of psychotherapy is revealed when action therapy methods and Socratic dialogue interact in a dance of equals. \n\n\n\nPRESENTER BIO\n\n\n\nChristine Padesky is a leading cognitive therapy innovator who provides workshops and consultation to therapists worldwide and develops audio and video therapist training materials (www.padesky.com). Along with Kathleen Mooney\, PhD\, Dr. Padesky is co-founder of the Center for Cognitive Therapy in Huntington Beach\, California and co-creator of Strengths-Based CBT.
