SUMMARY:Lights\, Camera\, Action: CBT for Anxiety (Vancouver 2018)
DESCRIPTION:2018 VANCOUVER\, CANADA –  two day / 11 hour workshop \nA new “Show Me” workshop presented this fall by Christine Padesky\nFor complete Workshop & On-line Registration Information visit https://www.cognitiveworkshops.com/cbt-for-anxiety \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nLIGHTS: When you shine a light on your therapy with anxious clients\, what do you see? Are the two of you leaning forward as participants in a thriller? Or is your client detailing a documentary of anxious moments while you flip through a mental script and try to figure out what your lines are supposed to be? This all new workshop teaches you how to light up your therapy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)\, panic disorder and social anxiety so you and your client are collaboratively engaged in viewing the central components of anxiety throughout therapy sessions. \nCAMERA: An important factor in successful anxiety treatment is a clear conceptualization. Is your therapy focused on a coherent understanding of what triggers and maintains anxiety or is there a shadowy darkness obscuring it? Just as a camera guides the viewer to focus on the most important elements of a film\, a coherent and individualized case conceptualization helps you and your client focus on the most important triggers and maintenance factors for anxiety. Learn how to collaboratively develop models for clearly understanding client experiences in GAD\, panic disorder and social anxiety. See how a good case conceptualization helps guide intervention choices so that each session helps move the client closer to a successful therapy outcome. \nACTION: CBT for anxiety relies on action-packed methods for its success. Learn how behavioral experiments\, imagery\, interactive writing\, and role plays can speed the pace of treatment progress. These methods lead to higher impact client learning than simply talking about anxiety and how to manage it. Over the course of the workshop participants will observe\, experience\, practice\, and analyze principles for employing action‍‍‍ methods throughout CBT for anxiety. This all new workshop builds on last year’s Action-Packed CBT: More Walk\, Less Talk workshop. Attendance at this previous workshop is not required to fully benefit from this one. \nDIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY: This new Show Me! Workshop is produced and directed by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD\, renowned for her clinical creativity. Observe her demonstrations of action-packed therapy methods as applied within anxiety treatment protocols for generalized anxiety disorder\, panic disorder\, and social anxiety. Just as directors sometimes overlay their own commentary onto a film\, Padesky provides commentary throughout the workshop to highlight therapy decision points and her rationale for the choices she makes. Participants are invited to practice and model these methods in role plays with time for questions and feedback. \nPadesky provides commentary throughout the workshop to highlight therapy decision points and her rationale for the choices she makes. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis workshop is intended for mental health professionals\, and students receiving clinical training in the mental health professions. SUMMARY:Action-Packed CBT: More Walk Less Talk (Canada 2018)
DESCRIPTION:WINNIPEG\, MANITOBA\, CANADA \n2 Day / 12 hour workshop by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD. (Advanced Single Fee $315 until Sept 21). LINK to ONLINE BROCHURE (opens in new window) \nAction-Packed CBT: More Walk\, Less Talk – a new “Show Me!” workshop \nIs talking the best way to promote change and growth? We don’t tell toddlers how to walk or ask them how they feel about walking. We encourage and support trial and error experience. How often do you leave a workshop feeling inspired but unsure how to do anything different in your next session? \nThe phrase\, “action-packed CBT” describes a therapeutic approach that combines talk with active learning experiences embedded into each session. It is designed to make therapy more effective and to promote faster client change. \nPadesky demonstrates a variety of action methods that can enhance cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other forms of psychotherapy. Like her other “Show Me” workshops\, she structures her teaching around clinical demonstrations rather than lectures. For each segment of the workshop\, she demonstrates particular methods so participating therapists can see exactly how Padesky conducts “action-packed” CBT. Structured exercises help therapists learn through experience how to implement action-oriented approaches. Thus\, “More walk and less talk.” Even so\, there is ample time for questions\, answers\, and discussion to promote a more complete understanding of how to apply these approaches with diverse clients in a variety of settings. \nAction methods demonstrated in this workshop include: interactive writing/drawing\, imagery\, role playing\, and behavioral experiments conducted both in and outside the office to test out beliefs and try new behaviors. A brainstorming section in the afternoon of the second day helps therapists discover how a variety of creative methods can be derived from these basic actions. Padesky guides workshop participants to develop a model over the course of the two days to help decide when to employ action approaches\, when listening and talk are the best interventions\, and what types of action are best suited to particular therapy purposes and goals. By the end of the workshop\, each participant has an opportunity to construct an individualized action plan for one of their own clients whose progress in therapy has stalled. \nJoin us this fall to observe and practice a variety of actions that promote client learning. Experience how action-packed therapy helps maximize client engagement\, discovery and change.\nSPONSOR\nHQS Professional Development\nwww.hqs-pd.ca\nBarbara Quesnel\, MSW\, RSW\nBarb@hqs.ca \nREGISTRATION\nwww.hqs-pd.ca \nDATE / TIME\nOctober 22 – 23\, 2018\n9:00 am – 4:30 pm \nWORKSHOP FEES – plenty of FREE parking\n$315 Early Single (until Sept 21)\n$295 Early Group (until Sept 21)\n$340 Full Registration Fee\n$320 Full Registration Group\n$225 Full-time Student \nTHIS WORKSHOP IS INTENDED FOR\nMental health professionals and graduate students in mental health fields. Non-CBT therapists will learn ways to incorporate action-oriented CBT practices into therapy. Beginning and intermediate CBT therapists will discover ways to transform treatment protocols into live action therapy. More advanced CBT therapists are encouraged to identify one or two clients with whom progress is slow and keep these clients in mind throughout the workshop. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nDESCRIBE two benefits of action-packed therapy\nRECOGNIZE action opportunities within clinical interchanges\nPLAN three actions appropriate to use with current clients\nNAME two action methods that foster client engagement\nDEMONSTRATE one action approach that is likely to enhance learning\nIDENTIFY two action methods that help promote change\nDEVISE in and out of office behavioral experiments\nEXPERIENCE how collaborative writing increases client engagement\nLINK imagery with in vivo change efforts\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Action-Packed CBT: More Walk Less Talk (Toronto 2017)
DESCRIPTION:2017 TORONTO\, CANADA –  two day / 12 hour workshop \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nIn this action-packed workshop\, Christine A. Padesky PhD demonstrates a variety of action methods that can enhance CBT and other forms of psychotherapy. Like her other “Show Me” workshops\, she structures her teaching around clinical demonstrations rather than lectures. The Structured exercises that follow help therapists learn through experience how to implement action-oriented approaches. Thus\, “More walk and less talk.” Even so\, there is ample time for questions\, answers\, and discussion to promote a more complete understanding of how to apply these approaches with diverse clients in a variety of settings. \nFor complete Workshop & On-line Registration Information visit https://ww.cognitiveworkshops.com/action-packed_cbt \nA new “Show Me” workshop presented this fall by Christine Padesky\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nDESCRIBE two benefits of action-packed therapy\nRECOGNIZE action opportunities within clinical interchanges\nPLAN three actions appropriate to use with current clients\nNAME two action methods that foster client engagement\nDEMONSTRATE one action approach that is likely to enhance learning\nIDENTIFY two action methods that help promote change\nDEVISE in and out of office behavioral experiments\nEXPERIENCE uses of writing for increasing client engagement\nLINK imagery with in vivo change efforts\n\nOur focus is on practical\, clinical tools for therapists\, using a hands-on format involving numerous role-plays and exercises\, accompanied by extensive handouts.\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis workshop is intended for mental health professionals\, and students receiving clinical training in the mental health professions. SUMMARY:Strengths-Based CBT for Vulnerable Clients & Chronic Issues (UK)
DESCRIPTION:DERBY\, UNITED KINGDOM  – 2 day / 12 hour workshop \nOn-Line Program Information: www.derby.ac.uk/health-and-social-care/events/calendar/strengths-based-cbt-for-vulnerable-clients-and-chronic-issues.php \nThis is the University of Derby’s final workshop with Dr Padesky. After 2016\, she plans to teach fewer workshops outside North America so she can complete several writing projects\, devote more time to consultation\, and develop international training programs that require less travel. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from her live and in person!\nWHAT IS STRENGTHS-BASED CBT? \nOver the past decades\, Padesky and Mooney have introduced a number of clinical innovations into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including use of constructive language\, four stages of Socratic dialogue\, therapeutic use of smiling\, positive imagery\, and methods to construct new beliefs and behavioral patterns. These contributions are now integrated into a unified model they call Strengths-Based CBT which has three areas of application. \nTHREE AREAS OF APPLICATION FOR SB-CBT \n\nIntegrate strengths within classic CBT\nHelp clients become more resilient using a four-step model\nCreate a NEW Paradigm for clients with chronic problems\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nMost therapists want to improve clients’ sense of well-being and overall quality of life\, in addition to relieving distress. This is especially true for vulnerable clients with complex issues and those who suffer social stigma because of chronic mental health problems. For these clients\, Strengths-Based CBT (SB-CBT) can provide a more positive therapy experience than therapy approaches that are solely problem focused. \nAn emphasis on strengths and resilience is a welcome change for clients who may feel worse when therapy is solely focused on problems\, especially when change comes slowly.\nWhile SB-CBT methods can be used with most types of clients\, this new workshop by master clinician Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D. places special emphasis on demonstrating SB-CBT with vulnerable clients and chronic issues. \nLearn how to \n\nIdentify client strengths even when clients deny their existence\nHelp clients build a personal model of resilience\nIncorporate strengths-based methods into classic CBT protocols\, and\nUse the NEW Paradigm approach to address chronic issues\n\nHOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH A MASTER CLINICIAN AT WORK AND WONDER? \n“How did she know to ask that?” “Why did she do that?” Past workshop participants frequently comment that some of the best learning in Christine Padesky’s workshops comes from her clinical demonstrations. \nListening to this feedback\, Dr. Padesky decided to structure a new workshop series around clinical demonstrations\, rather than didactic presentations. In this “Show Me!” type workshop\, she reveals what is going through her mind during demonstrations of SB-CBT applications with vulnerable clients. You will have the opportunity to ask questions such as: \n\nWhat are the principles of Strengths-Based CBT?\nHow do these guide my therapy choices?\nHow does this person fit or not fit with what evidence-based practice says to do?\nWhat if there are many evidence-based paths to take? Or none? How do I decide what to do?\n\nDr. Padesky demonstrates SB-CBT applications under both ideal and more challenging circumstances. After each demonstration\, experiential learning activities offer opportunities to practice and discover gaps in knowledge and skill. Dr. Padesky answers questions and provides clarifying demonstrations during these practice periods. \nEach demonstration highlights subtle decision points that guide her SB-CBT practice. For example: \n\nWhen and how do you identify client strengths and bring these into client awareness?\nWhat nonverbal therapist behaviors are essential to foster client resilience and change?\nWhen and how do you decide to help a client build a personal model of resilience?\nHow do you decide when it might be better to construct new beliefs and behaviors rather than test the old ones?\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nOBSERVE the thought processes of a master clinician at work\nPRACTICE questions which help vulnerable clients identify strengths\nBROADEN your abilities to utilize client strengths\nBECOME more aware of your nonverbal communications to clients\nBUILD vulnerable clients’ resilience\nINTEGRATE SB-CBT with classic CBT\nELICIT positive imagery to promote change\nPRACTICE NEW Paradigm methods that address chronic issues\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis workshop is suited for therapists of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. Therapists with similar levels of experience are paired for role plays to maximize the learning value of these exercises. \nIf you have attended Dr. Padesky’s previous strengths-based workshops (Building Resilience\, Simplifying Personality Disorder Treatment with the NEW Paradigm) you will have opportunities to refresh and update your skills\, compare your clinical use of these models with Dr. Padesky’s demonstrations\, and develop a deeper understanding of Strengths-Based CBT. \nJoin Padesky in Derby for this unique learning opportunity to see Strengths-Based CBT in action with vulnerable clients and chronic issues.\nWORKSHOP SPONSOR\nCollege of Health and Social Care\nUniversity of Derby \nPRESENTERS\nChristine A.
