SUMMARY:Mind Over Mood 2: The Challenges of Aligning Self-Help with Evidence-based Practice (UK)
DESCRIPTION:BELFAST\, NORTHERN IRELAND:  1 hour Christine Padesky Keynote Address at the 44th Annual BABCP Conference \nKeynote information available online from: Conference Programme (opens in PDF format) (LINK NOT LONGER VALID) \nTO REGISTER for the Conference visit: http://www.babcpconference.com/registration/registration_2016.htm \nMOM2 reflects the highest standards of evidence-based practice in an appealing and easy to use self-help workbook.\nKEYNOTE ABSTRACT: There has been a rapid expansion in CBT protocols and practices since the first edition of Mind Over Mood was published in 1995. Our goals for the 2nd Edition of Mind Over Mood (MOM2) (Greenberger & Padesky\, 2016) were to reflect the highest standards of evidence-based practice and\, at the same time\, offer an appealing and easy to use self-help workbook. Reaching these goals required rethinking the structure and content of MOM2 in ways we did not anticipate at the beginning of our four year effort. What we learned in the process offers helpful insights into current CBT practice as well as guidelines for integrating self-help into therapy. \nThis keynote highlights the practical and accessible solutions we derived to meet challenges such as: \n\nMOM2 teaches readers to understand and manage a variety of moods\, yet there are different treatment paths for each mood. How can a single book align with a myriad of evidence-based treatments and remain simple for readers to follow?\nThere are now many CBT therapies. We wanted to integrate classic CBT methods with evidence-based practices that emphasize acceptance\, mindfulness\, and positive psychology. How is it possible to meaningfully integrate multiple treatment perspectives and at the same time maintain a focus on step-by-step development of mood management skills?\nAlthough self-help can be less rigorous than therapy\, we wanted to encourage readers of MOM2 to follow evidence-based practices such as: regular completion of mood measures\, rehearsal of skills until mastery is achieved\, goal setting enhanced by motivational interviewing\, and proactive relapse management. How can readers be enticed to follow such good treatment principles?\n\nIn learning how to solve these challenges we discovered that a self-help workbook can be aligned with evidence-based practice but only when the demands of each are fully understood.\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND: This keynote address is suited for attendees of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. \nCONFERENCE SPONSOR: British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)www.babcpconference.com/index.htm \nPRESENTER: Christine A. SUMMARY:Target Mood-Specific Skills Using Mind Over Mood 2 (UK)
DESCRIPTION:BELFAST\, NORTHERN IRELAND  – 1 day Pre-Conference Workshop at the 44th Annual BABCP Conference \nWorkshop Information available online from: http://www.babcpconference.com/programme/workshops_2016.htm \nTO REGISTER visit: http://www.babcpconference.com/registration/registration_2016.htm \nThere is an advantage to supplementing therapy with a workbook like Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition.\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nEvidence-based practice requires therapists to teach mood-specific skills and follow different treatment guidelines depending upon the mood targeted. Clients experience high rates of comorbidity and so there is an advantage to supplementing therapy with a workbook like Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition\, 2016 (MOM2) which addresses a variety of moods and teaches both general and mood-specific skills. This workshop shows therapists how to maintain fidelity to treatment protocols by assigning MOM2 chapters in different orders depending upon the moods addressed (depression\, anxiety\, anger\, guilt & shame). Participants learn evidence-based guidelines for client skills practice\, when certain interventions can be counter-therapeutic\, and a 3-step plan for relapse management. \nIn addition\, Padesky demonstrates how to navigate common obstacles that arise during use of: behavioral activation and thought records (depression); fear ladders\, exposure\, identification of safety behaviors\, and behavioral experiments (anxiety); assertive communication and forgiveness (anger); seriousness ratings\, responsibility pies\, reparations and self-forgiveness (guilt and shame). Guidelines are presented for how and when to add methods drawn from acceptance therapies\, mindfulness and positive psychology to these classic CBT approaches. \nMaintain fidelity to treatment protocols by assigning MOM2 chapters in different orders depending upon the moods addressed.\nNote: MOM2 is significantly different from the first edition of this book in both structure and content and includes new and wholly revised chapters as well as 25 new worksheets. Since this workshop primarily emphasizes this new material\, it is helpful both for therapists who have extensive experience with the first edition and those who don’t. Therapists who own MOM2 are encouraged to bring it to the workshop. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nAttendees learn to: \n\nIdentify skills empirically linked to improvement in depression and anxiety\nLink chapter reading order in MOM2 to treatment protocols\nFollow evidence-based guidelines for gratitude diaries\, mindfulness practice\, and other treatment methods\nConsider when a focus on forgiveness is therapeutic and when it is not\nAssist clients in following a 3-step plan for relapse management\n\nGuidelines are presented for how and when to add methods drawn from acceptance therapies\, mindfulness and positive psychology to these classic CBT approaches.\nWHO SHOULD ATTENDThis workshop is suited for therapists of all knowledge levels: novice\, intermediate and expert. Therapists with similar levels of experience are paired for role plays to maximize the learning value of these exercises. \nWORKSHOP SPONSORBritish Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP)www.babcpconference.com/index.htm \nPRESENTERChristine A. Guidelines are presented for how and when to add methods drawn from acceptance therapies\, mindfulness and positive psychology to these classic CBT approaches. Participants learn evidence-based guidelines for client skills practice\, when certain interventions can be counter-therapeutic\, and a 3-step plan for relapse management. \nParticipants in this workshop will be among the first therapists to learn directly from Dr. Padesky about how to link the new version of Mind Over Mood with evidence based treatment protocols.\nWorkshop learning is enhanced through live clinical demonstrations\, structured participant role-plays\, discussions and exercises designed to apply the principles learned to clinical case material. \nLearn how to use MOM2 in therapy to work more effectively with depression\, anxiety disorders\, anger\, guilt\, and shame.\nWHAT IS MOM2? \nMOM2 (Mind Over Mood\, 2nd Edition\, 2016) was released October 15\, 2015\, and is a fully revised and updated 2nd Edition. It is significantly different from the first edition in both structure and content and includes new and wholly revised chapters as well as 25 new worksheets. \n\nexpanded sections on anxiety management including fear ladders\, safety behaviours\, imagery\, mindfulness and acceptance methods\nintegration of evidence-based methods drawn from positive psychology such as gratitude diaries and happiness ratings\nnew chapters on goal setting\, relapse management\nan expanded chapter on using behavioral experiments to test assumptions\n\nDO I NEED A COPY FOR THIS WORKSHOP?  \nSince this workshop primarily emphasizes this new material\, it is helpful both for therapists who have extensive experience with the first edition and those who don’t. Therapists who own MOM2 are encouraged to bring it to the workshop. \nMOM2 is available in many local bookstores and from online booksellers such as Amazon.com (USA) and Amazon.ca (Canada).
