SUMMARY:Lights\, Camera\, Action: CBT for Anxiety (Vancouver 2018)
DESCRIPTION:2018 VANCOUVER\, CANADA –  two day / 11 hour workshop \nA new “Show Me” workshop presented this fall by Christine Padesky\nFor complete Workshop & On-line Registration Information visit https://www.cognitiveworkshops.com/cbt-for-anxiety \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION \nLIGHTS: When you shine a light on your therapy with anxious clients\, what do you see? Are the two of you leaning forward as participants in a thriller? Or is your client detailing a documentary of anxious moments while you flip through a mental script and try to figure out what your lines are supposed to be? This all new workshop teaches you how to light up your therapy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)\, panic disorder and social anxiety so you and your client are collaboratively engaged in viewing the central components of anxiety throughout therapy sessions. \nCAMERA: An important factor in successful anxiety treatment is a clear conceptualization. Is your therapy focused on a coherent understanding of what triggers and maintains anxiety or is there a shadowy darkness obscuring it? Just as a camera guides the viewer to focus on the most important elements of a film\, a coherent and individualized case conceptualization helps you and your client focus on the most important triggers and maintenance factors for anxiety. Learn how to collaboratively develop models for clearly understanding client experiences in GAD\, panic disorder and social anxiety. See how a good case conceptualization helps guide intervention choices so that each session helps move the client closer to a successful therapy outcome. \nACTION: CBT for anxiety relies on action-packed methods for its success. Learn how behavioral experiments\, imagery\, interactive writing\, and role plays can speed the pace of treatment progress. These methods lead to higher impact client learning than simply talking about anxiety and how to manage it. Over the course of the workshop participants will observe\, experience\, practice\, and analyze principles for employing action‍‍‍ methods throughout CBT for anxiety. This all new workshop builds on last year’s Action-Packed CBT: More Walk\, Less Talk workshop. Attendance at this previous workshop is not required to fully benefit from this one. \nDIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY: This new Show Me! Workshop is produced and directed by Christine A. Padesky\, PhD\, renowned for her clinical creativity. Observe her demonstrations of action-packed therapy methods as applied within anxiety treatment protocols for generalized anxiety disorder\, panic disorder\, and social anxiety. Just as directors sometimes overlay their own commentary onto a film\, Padesky provides commentary throughout the workshop to highlight therapy decision points and her rationale for the choices she makes. Participants are invited to practice and model these methods in role plays with time for questions and feedback. \nPadesky provides commentary throughout the workshop to highlight therapy decision points and her rationale for the choices she makes. \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\nThis workshop is intended for mental health professionals\, and students receiving clinical training in the mental health professions. SUMMARY:Three Effective PTSD Interventions Most Therapists Don’t Know (USA 2018)
DESCRIPTION:2018 GARDEN GROVE\, CALIFORNIA / 90 minute clinical session \nMost people naturally recover from trauma. What can we learn from them to help us treat PTSD more effectively? Padesky reviews findings from researchers Ehlers and Clark in the United Kingdom and highlights effective interventions developed by them that have not been widely disseminated in the United States. These interventions foster client collaboration in PTSD treatment\, identify the key moments in traumatic memories that are most important to address\, and help clients put the trauma in the past so they can reclaim a full and engaged life. \nEach intervention is illustrated with clinical examples that show therapists how to use these methods in their own practice.\nOBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this session\, attendees will be able to: \n\nIdentify three ways people who develop PTSD differ from people who naturally recover from trauma\nDescribe reliving methods used to identify emotional hot spots and gaps in trauma memories\nApply “then” and “now” methods to places and circumstances of trauma\n\nWHENDuring the Summit for Clinical ExcellenceEast Meets West: Multiple Perspectives on Trauma & AddictionMarch 2\, 2018 from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm \nWHEREWyndham Anaheim Garden Grove12021 Harbor BlvdGarden Grove\, CA 92840Special Conference Room Rates include FREE Parking (discount cut off date January 31\, 2018) \nCOSTfrom $199-375 (early birds save alot – hurry – only limited slots for maximum savings)https://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/fees \nCONTACTKari Primiano216-258-0867 or email kprimiano@iabhc.com \nEvent Websitehttps://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/home \nREGISTRATION PAGEhttps://vendome.swoogo.com/2018-orange-county/begin \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Assertive Defense of the Self: CBT for Social Anxiety (USA 2017)
DESCRIPTION:SAN DIEGO\, CALIFORNIA: two hour master clinician seminar presented at the 51st Annual Convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) \nMASTER CLINICIAN SEMINAR 6: Assertive Defense of the Self: CBT for Social Anxiety \nPRESENTER: Christine A. Padesky\, PhD\, Center for Cognitive Therapy\, Huntington Beach\, California with Kathleen A. Mooney\, PhD\, Center for Cognitive Therapy (Huntington Beach\, CA)\nPadesky brief biography\nMooney brief biography \nDESCRIPTION: Many therapists treat social anxiety with an emphasis on testing client beliefs that other people will be critical and rejecting if they make mistakes or look foolish. Padesky (1997) has argued that an emphasis on these “danger” beliefs misses the point with treatment of social anxiety. She suggests that\, just like in the treatments of other phobias\, treatment of social anxiety is more effective when the focus is on intensive exposure to criticism and rejection with the opportunity for coping practice. \nPadesky developed a method\, “assertive defense of the self\,” which guides socially anxious clients in the development of their coping skills to manage criticism and rejection as well as the confidence to use them. She uses video (Padesky\, 2008) to demonstrate and discuss the several stages of “assertive defense of the self.” While this step-by-step approach is simple to understand\, there are nuances that can derail therapists in its application. Padesky highlights common therapist errors and beliefs that interfere with successful treatment outcome. \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nARTICULATE the relative benefits of a focus on coping or danger in CBT with social anxiety\nUSE a targeted interview to identify feared criticisms and “assertive defense” responses\nDESIGN relevant behavioral experiments for out of session practice\n\nRECOMMENDED READINGS \nClark\, D.M.\, Ehlers\, A.\, Hackmann\, A.\, McManus\, F.\, Fennell\, M.J.V.\, Waddington\, L.\, Grey\, N.\, &Wild\, J. SUMMARY:Anxiety Traps! CBT Solutions (Canada 2017)
DESCRIPTION:2017 St. John\, CANADA –  two day / 12 hour workshop (9:00 am – 4:30 pm each day) \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONClients often feel trapped in anxiety. This is because common anxiety coping strategies such as avoidance and safety behaviors actually maintain anxiety disorders. Unfortunately\, some common therapy practices designed to relieve client distress can also trap therapists and clients in ineffective cycles of therapy. \nLeading cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) instructor Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D. teaches principles and methods that help therapists and clients avoid both types of anxiety traps. Padesky teaches which CBT therapy interventions are most helpful for each type of anxiety disorder and when using these same methods can actually prolong anxiety treatment. \nOne of the features past participants of this workshop found most helpful was Dr. Padesky’s new framework of “danger disorders” and “coping disorders” which simplifies decision making about which interventions to choose even when the client experiences more than one type of anxiety disorder. \nThose who have attended Dr. Padesky’s workshops in the past are familiar with her signature workshop approaches. After she demonstrates key therapy methods via live demonstrations or video\, participants have an opportunity to bring their learning to life in carefully designed experiential exercises. These are framed by her clear didactic teaching\, organized handouts\, and rich clinical discussions. Learning unfolds in simple steps which layer over the course of the workshop to yield a sophisticated and nuanced treatment approach by the end. \nAttend this workshop to learn principles underpinning anxiety treatment methods and to practice the skills required to effectively use CBT anxiety protocols. Enjoy this workshop for all Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humour\, and optimism which support learning to treat your clients’ anxiety disorders more effectively.\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nTEACH clients the anxiety equation\nRECOGNIZE common treatment principles for danger and coping disorders\nIDENTIFY triggers and maintenance factors for each anxiety disorder\nPRACTICE induction methods used in treatment of panic\nTEACH clients to address “what if?” GAD worries with action plans\nLEARN methods for working with anxious imagery\nGIVE a rationale for “assertive defense of the self” with social anxiety\nOBSERVE approaches that address post-traumatic memory gaps\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTENDThis workshop is exclusively for the staff of addiction and mental health Services\, Horizon Health Network\, Saint John Zone\, New Brunswick\, Canada. \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols\, more expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend to learn treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework that will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nWORKSHOP SPONSORSaint John Regional Hospital Foundation \nThe Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation has raised over $80 million to date in support of excellence and innovation in the areas of equipment\, mental health\, research\, education and patient comfort at the Saint John Regional Hospital\, the largest health care centre in the province – providing world-class care for all New Brunswickers. \nThis workshop focus is on practical\, clinical tools for therapists\, using a hands-on format involving numerous role-plays and exercises\, accompanied by extensive handouts.\nPRESENTER – Christine A. SUMMARY:CBT for Depression & Social Anxiety: Evidence-Based Methods and Clinical Innovations (DENMARK 2014)
DESCRIPTION:COPENHAGEN\, DENMARK \nDESCRIPTION: Anxiety and depression are common human experiences. When these become severe and disabling\, therapists want to be sure to use the most effective treatments to help clients quickly and also reduce relapse. This 2-day workshop by Christine A. Padesky\, Ph.D.\, world-renowned cognitive behavioral therapy instructor\, demonstrates interventions effective in the treatment of depression and anxiety\, with a special focus on one of the most common forms of anxiety\, social anxiety. Attend this workshop to observe and practice methods known to effectively treat depression and anxiety. Enjoy Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humor\, and optimism while you learn how to more effectively help your clients. \nSPONSOR: The School for Cognitive & Behavioural Therapies\, Mental Health Services \n\nFor Online information & registration: visit https://rhp.plan2learn.dk/KursusValg.aspx?id=24779\nOr use search term “Padesky” in their online Catalog: https://rhp.plan2learn.dk\n\nORGANIZER & CONTACT INFO: Irene Oestrich <Irene.Oestrich@regionh.dk> \nTOP 8 REASONS TO COME TO THIS WORKSHOP \nIf you dread working with depressed clients\, ]you will learn how depression treatment can be enjoyable\, rather than depressing \nIf you work with depressed clients but don’t use CBT\, most depressed people relapse; Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies have the lowest relapse rates \nIf you already use CBT for depression but have trouble getting client participation\, this workshop shows how to engage depressed clients in therapy \nIf you don’t use CBT for social anxiety\, because this approach is fun to learn and effective for clients \nIf you use classic CBT for social anxiety and some of your clients don’t improve\, ADS helps clients learn to cope with criticism and rejection\, which can make all the difference. ADS = Assertive Defense of the Self” \nIf you appreciate clear\, articulate explanations and demonstrations of therapy methods\, Dr. Padesky is renowned for the quality and depth of her teaching \nIf you learn best through a combination of listening\, watching\, and practicing\, this workshop includes live demonstrations\, videos\, and structured skills practice \nIf you have a sense of humor\, a keen interest in learning\, and dedication to your profession\, everyone will benefit from your participation in this intensive & fun learning event \nPROGRAM INFORMATION \nOn Day 1\, participants learn how to effectively use behavioral activation and thought records to help depressed clients become more active and test out negative beliefs. Dr. Padesky emphasizes treatment methods that have been empirically shown to reduce relapse. She models language\, attitudes and metaphors that encourage client engagement and engender hope even when clients are pessimistic and hopeless. Common traps that interfere with treatment are highlighted with demonstrations of how to effectively and collaboratively manage them. Differences between depression and grief are highlighted. \nOn Day 2\, Padesky shows how anxiety disorder treatment is similar and different from depression treatment and addresses comorbidity issues. Unlike depression treatment\, each anxiety disorder has a specific treatment protocol which is different from the others. Despite these differences\, common treatment principles exist which are reflected in each protocol. As an in-depth illustration of anxiety treatments\, Padesky teaches a method she pioneered for social anxiety\, “Assertive Defense of the Self.” \nMany cognitive behavioral therapies for social anxiety emphasize tests of client fears that other people will be critical and rejecting. Padesky has argued that an emphasis on the low likelihood of negative reactions from others misses the opportunity to expose clients to what they fear: criticism. Exposure to fears with coping practice is a central principle of effective treatment for all anxiety disorders. Her innovative approach uses scripted and unscripted role plays to guide socially anxious clients in the development of coping skills and confidence to manage criticism and rejection. This workshop teaches each stage of Assertive Defense of the Self (ADS)\, highlighting common therapist errors and beliefs that interfere with successful treatment outcome. Those who have attended Dr. \nLearning unfolds in simple steps which layer over the course of the workshop to yield a sophisticated and nuanced treatment approach by the end. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to \n\nUse language and the therapy relationship to enhance client engagement in therapy\nHelp depressed clients increase the three types of activity empirically linked to positive therapy outcomes\nEmploy guided discovery to help clients effectively test out thoughts on a 7-column thought record\nDebrief homework assignments to maximize client learning\nDescribe the anxiety equation\nUse a targeted interview to identify feared criticisms and “assertive defense” responses for social anxiety\nPractice Assertive Defense of the Self (ADS) from both client and therapist perspectives\nDesign relevant behavioral experiments for out of session practice\nIntegrate ADS with other empirically supported therapies for social anxiety\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

Changes in CBT over the past three decades provide platforms for “new” therapy methods such as constructive use of imagery\, client-generated metaphors\, and therapeutic use of smiling and silence. New therapy models\, to (a) build resilience and (b) treat personality disorders by constructing new interpersonal beliefs and behaviors\, foreshadow a trend toward CBT approaches that more explicitly help people thrive in the face of life challenges. \nEvents at this year’s Evolution will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center\, and the neighboring Hilton and Marriott Hotels. \nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Prescription for Panic: CBT (Nevada USA 2013)
DESCRIPTION:LAS VEGAS\, NEVADA  90 min presentation \nIn this 90 minute clinical presentation\, Dr. Padesky describes each of the essential stages of effective CBT for panic disorder and provides video demonstrations. With characteristic clarity\, warmth\, and humor\, Padesky makes the case for why CBT should usually be the first “prescription for panic.” \nWhy should CBT usually be the first “prescription for panic”?\n \n\nAccording to American Psychiatric Association practice guidelines\, pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are both first line recommended treatments for panic disorder\nHowever\, when length of treatment and relapse are considered\, CBT has been shown in numerous randomized controlled outcome studies to be superior to pharmacological treatments\nDespite these empirical findings\, many psychiatrists and physicians lack the knowledge and skill to either competently deliver CBT for panic disorder or describe it well enough to patients to facilitate a successful referral\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues

SUMMARY:Anxiety Traps! CBT Antidotes (UK 2013)
DESCRIPTION:DERBY\, UNITED KINGDOM \nHear a brief description on YouTube \nIdeal for intermediate level CBT therapists who already have experience working with anxiety disorder protocols\, more expert CBT therapists who attended reported the workshop includes useful new ideas (danger/coping disorder framework) and methods (assertive defense of the self for social anxiety) that make this workshop suitable even for experienced CBT therapists. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend. Learning treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nCOURSE OVERVIEW: Clients often feel trapped in anxiety. This is because common anxiety coping strategies such as avoidance and safety behaviors unwittingly maintain anxiety disorders. Unfortunately\, it is also the case that some common therapy practices designed to relieve client distress instead trap therapists and clients in ineffective cycles of therapy. Novice CBT therapists are also welcome to attend. Learning treatment methods\, principles\, and Padesky’s organizing framework will speed mastery of anxiety therapies. \nAttend this workshop to learn principles underpinning anxiety treatment methods and to practice the skills required to effectively use CBT anxiety protocols. Enjoy this workshop for all Dr. Padesky’s embedded creativity\, humour\, and optimism which help you learn to treat your clients’ anxiety disorders more effectively. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVES \n\nWrite out the anxiety equation\nRecognize common treatment principles for danger and coping disorders\nPractice induction methods used in treatment of panic\nTeach clients to address “what if?” GAD worries with action plans\nGive a rationale for “assertive defense of the self” with social anxiety\nObserve approaches that address post-traumatic memory gap\n\nSHARE with your Mental Health Colleagues
