Cognitive Therapy for
Persistent Problems:
A
New Paradigm
For over fifteen years, Drs. Christine A. Padesky &
Kathleen A. Mooney have been actively working on helping clients overcome
persistent problems. Their work has culminated in a new paradigm where the
focus is on construction of NEW belief systems and interpersonal behavior
patterns. It can be used with clients with diverse combinations of
personality disorder diagnoses and is usually implemented after standard
CBT methods have been used to treat Axis I mood problems such as
depression or anxiety.
Participants learn via clinical demonstrations and
structured exercises to help clients: a) conceptualize the OLD system that
perpetuates persistent problems, b) identify the benefits of change, c)
construct a NEW system to deal with persistent problems, and d) setup and
debrief behavioral experiments that build NEW beliefs and interpersonal
skills in order to strengthen and sustain the NEW system.
Cognitive Therapy for
Persistent Problems:
A
New Paradigm
By the end of this
workshop, participants will be able to:
 |
INTEGRATE
cognitive theory, research & treatment methods |
 |
employ
a structured interview to help clients
compassionately conceptualize their OLD system |
 |
identify,
develop & strengthen new
systems of underlying assumptions, core beliefs &
behavioral strategies |
 |
organize
therapy interventions with an OLD / NEW conceptualization worksheet |
 |
set up &
debrief
behavioral experiments in ways that build & strengthen the NEW system |

Strengths & Build Resilience
Using CT
Resilient people have skills to help them face and
handle positive and negative life events. In recent years, Drs. Christine
A. Padesky and Kathleen A. Mooney have developed a cognitive therapy
approach for building and strengthening resilience. This approach
integrates knowledge from resilience research, traditional cognitive
therapy methods, and constructive cognitive therapy approaches to help
people build and apply a personal model of resilience.
In this workshop, Drs. Padesky and Mooney teach and
demonstrate all four steps of this new approach as well as identify the
six main areas of competence that are characteristic of resilient
individuals. In addition, through structured practice exercises,
participants experience the processes used to build resilience either as a
therapist or as a "client.”
