"Cognitive
Therapy of Personality Disorders"
Advanced Cognitive Therapists,
Join us
at Camp Cognitive Therapy for
Personality Disorders. This training is
specifically designed for advanced
cognitive therapists.
It provides the rare opportunity
to combine intellectual challenge with the best aspects of a retreat:
chances to
read, interact with
colleagues, relax, stroll,
and
exercise.
The Thursday evening party and
songfest
have become favorites.
Camp is limited to 32 participants. We hope you join us.
Camp Leaders
P.S. We
updated our
description of Camp CTPD (09/23/05). There
are no changes in Camp just a more complete description of our
program. Camp is focused on our new paradigm of OLD / NEW systems.
|
|
The landmark text Cognitive
Therapy of Personality Disorders (2nd ed) identifies the growing
research base that supports the use of cognitive therapy to treat
personality disorders. Yet, client processes such as avoidance,
rigidity, and angry attacks pose challenges to the therapy.
In Camp CTPD, we present a
cognitive paradigm for working with personality disorders that Drs.
Padesky and Mooney have been actively developing over the past fifteen
years. We emphasize aspects of cognitive theory and therapy that
enhance treatment flexibility and client learning.
We teach how to:
 |
Establish collaborative
relationships with clients of many personality types
|
 |
Communicate non-defensively
during conflict and impasse
|
 |
Employ a structured interview
to help clients compassionately conceptualize their “OLD” / “NEW”
personality systems
|
 |
Organize therapy
interventions with an “OLD” / “NEW” worksheet
|
 |
Design behavioral experiments
that test predictions based on “OLD” and “NEW” systems
|
 |
Help clients develop new
underlying assumptions, core beliefs and more flexible
behavioral strategies |
Therapist awareness and ability
to manage one’s own responses is a critical skill in the successful
treatment of personality disorders. Therapists can become trapped in
frustration, hopelessness, anger, hurt or resentment. Camp
participants work individually and in small groups to identify and
evaluate therapists beliefs and behaviors that contribute to therapy
impasse.
We emphasize experiential
practice. Learning at Camp CTPD is enriched by a mixture of clinical
demonstrations, structured participant exercises, didactic
presentations, video segments, observations and analyses of personal
and interpersonal clinical processes, work groups, and selected
readings.

Jill desperately wants to change. But she
doesn't do anything we agree upon between sessions and barely sets therapy goals. |
 |
Ali asks my opinion and then knocks down
anything I say. |
 |
Pat is very reactive to my tone and words. If
I say the "wrong" thing or "look" in an offending way, Pat blows up in
a rage. |
 |
Harry gets very emotional and brings up a lot
of issues near the end of every session. He leaves more agitated than when the session
began. |

by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing professional education for
psychologists. The Center for Cognitive Therapy maintains responsibility for the program. |

|
| Camp is
specifically designed for Advanced or Advanced-Intermediate cognitive
therapists interested in treatment of personality disorders.
|
 | Camp
eligibility is in part determined by previous attendance at certain types of
training programs. For example, attendees of any of our Winter Workshops,
Intensive Training Program, Supervision Summit (Oxford) and previous Camps. If you have received comparable training in cognitive
therapy elsewhere you may be eligible for Camp.
Comparable training would include:
extended training from experienced cognitive therapists and supervised
practice.
|
|
 | To be able to
attend Camp CT you need to be an Advanced or Advanced-Intermediate Cognitive
Therapist skilled in case conceptualization, treatment planning, and
implementation of cognitive therapy protocols for depression, anxiety and
personality disorders. Other skills include the ability
to distinguish among automatic thoughts, underlying assumptions, and
schemas and familiarity with intervention methods
specifically designed to test each level of thought.
|
|
 | Certified
cognitive therapists are eligible to attend if they have received their
certification from the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (ACT,
www.AcademyofCT.org), the British
Association of Behaviourial and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP,
www.BABCP.org) or other similar national
certification organizations. |
|
 | It is helpful if a cognitive therapist who is
familiar to us recommends you as "ready to attend Camp." |
|
 | All applicants are screened for eligibility. |

Policy
Refunds (less $50 processing fee) allowed if
received in writing no later than January 9, 2006.
Due to the extremely limited size of the workshop,
cancellations affect us significantly. Your payment, less a $50 processing fee, is happily
refunded if we receive notification in writing no later than the
January 9, 2006 cancellation deadline.
After the cancellation deadline, no refund is possible
regardless of the reason unless we are able to re-book the space. While we make every
attempt to re-book, it is difficult for someone else to make reasonable travel
arrangements and re-arrange work schedules at the last minute.
By making the cancellation
period 5+ weeks in advance, we have some chance of re-booking your position.
In order to
make re-booking possible, once a workshop fills, we prepare a wait list.
If you apply to
Camp and are not
accepted, your monies are refunded in full.

advanced course that lives up to its billing. It is clear that the
instructors put a great deal of time into the Camp.
My attitude toward working with personality
disorders shifted to a more compassionate approach and optimism -
change is possible.
A great opportunity to meet experts from all
over the world.
Draws together many of the threads in past
Camps in a very clear and meaningful way. It is exciting to see how
the material has both matured and become more elegant.

Excellent way to further CBT skills.
Camp gives me the knowledge to teach and write
about CT.
I was both challenged and felt supported.
I think this Camp was the best of all the
Camps I have attended… It was perfect. I filled up my yellow pad with
meaningful notes and strategies.
Challenged some of my negative assumptions
about what is possible.
I came feeling discouraged about how I was
treating personality disorders and am leaving feeling energized and
eager to apply these skills. Not only theory, but good practice.
Camp is my most meaningful continuing
education experience; I look forward to it each year.
Outstanding, wonderful, superb.
Thank you for a great week of learning and
fun. |
